seems every lfs has a different opinion im just beginning {again } and went ahead and bought sand for a sandbed in the tank now im having second thoughts my question is should it be in the tank or sump?

It should be wherever you want it.

The advantage to having sand in the sump is that it helps to breed critters. It's a little easier to clean in the sump as you aren't disturbing the DT. Keeping it out of the DT means you don't have to worry about cleaning it. On the other hand, most people have more room, and hence more sand capacity in their DT, and the sand looks good. It also provides a home for many interesting critters in the DT where they can be seen more easily.

In my tank, I'll have sand in both (it's cycling now). However if I were running a store, I'd keep it only in the fuge and maybe one DT.

in a few cases, it would definitely need to be in the tank. those being whenever you are keeping a critter that needs a sandbed like a burrowing wrasse, sandsifting goby, etc..

otherwise, it's up to you.

some of the most personable fish live in the sand. jaw fish, and many gobies need sand and are some of the hobbyists favorite fish. sand in the display makes the aquarium more natural, so i vote put sand in the display.

sand isnt the best idea in some setups though. many ultra low nutrient sps systems with strong flow would benefit with no sand bed in the DT
