sand in QT

I had planned on acquiring a few fish that prefer sand. I was wondering if there's anyway to put sand into a QT tank without it affecting the meds. I've read somewhere that silica sand (play sand from home depot) won't affect it. Would the coated freshwater gravel affect it any?

The affect should be minimal. But I would only use "dry" reef sand. I know some people do it, but every time I've tried using "live" sand from my DT it always ends up rotten smelling in the QT.

Preferring sand and needing it are two different things. If a fish is a burrower that needs sand, use a shallow tupperware tray with sand, (the less the better), then dump it. I don't know what the coated FW gravel is, but there is lots of "coated" stuff that's FW safe, but not SW.
