Sand or no sand...

Hi All,

I have seen a few different fuge designs some with sand, some with a mud stuff and some with no sand. What are the pros/cons of each one or which is better?

Also if I was to add sand or mud to my fuge will it cause a cycle or any other harm to the tank? I don't have any livestock in the tank ATM but I want to prevent worsening the cycle...

FYI the fuge is a 10G tank all on it's own...

It depends on what you want in the fug. If you're just going to grow some chaeto, then bare bottom is fine. If you want pods, then you're going to need some rock rubble.

adding sand to a fuge will not cause a cycle. Adding new live rock to a fuge could however.
alot of reefers prefer a barebottom fuge with cheato because it is easier to clean out the accumulation of detrius esp when the chaeto ball get really dense.
Similarily there has been increasing preference for remote deep sand beds run in a separate refugium

there is alot of information on this thread regarding refugiums
