I feel the lighting is the key, if you have a max or crocea with good enough lighting, I think they are fine on the substrate as long as the clam is happy. I don't think however I would put a gigas up on the rockwork.
Everybody says thats the way it needs to be but why? They're rock dwellers primarily for protection (boring into it). If you are providing everything it needs why not leave it on the substrate if its happy there?
