sand sifters?

they all got eaten ;)

i keep the mantis by itself, and just move the substrate infrequently using some chopsticks, believe it or not, since i sometimes have to pick up uneaten food bits....i don't know whether that is correct though, but since i've had that mantis for a couple years now, i guess it's good enough :)

hey kalim. you've been quite helpful since i started keeping mantis. so, you just stir the sand up infrequently. approximately how often are you talking about-once a month or more? stirring will help depreciate any anaerobic activity? i have noticed quite a few sand sifting clams in my sand also but i don't think that they are enough to do the job considering that they are only about a 1/16" wide.

hmmm...i don't do it regularly (too lazy)....but i'd say around 2 weeks to a month. any longer and you might get some buildup of bad byproducts, i figure. then, when you stir it, boom, there goes your mantis. i read a while back that some starfish can be used for this, and i do not think mantis go for starfish (?)

i have also heard that stars are good sifters especially serpent types. i just got done identifying 3 different kinds of 'pods in this tank also. they are anywhere from 1/16" to 3/16", there only being one of the bigger ones(that i have seen). does your mantis eat those guys too?. i'm very surprised that the larger one that i saw was even in there yet. maybe my mantis just hasn't realised they're there yet.

the only time i've seen them in a mantis tank was when i was housing the mantis in a 20 gallon....sorry, other than that, i couldn't tell you more....have not seen a mantis hunting them, but then again, i have kept all the individuals i cared for pretty well-fed.
