Sand Supplier?

Tom,

If you find a good source for new aragonite sand, please let me know. I want to get some for my RDSB. I need enough for about two five gallon buckets (don't know how much that weighs).

Thanks

Minh

Is this the kind of thing we can order by the pallet and have sent on freight? If there are enough ppl interested, it could be a considerable cost savings.

I know when I was big into paintball I was ordering Paintballs from the east cost by the pallet and it cut the cost in half...

I looked into ordering through Vinca Services once before. They would only ship by the truckload or more. I think we would need a huge group buy to make that work.

Truckload... All my DSB fantasies come true...

I mean, if the deal is soooo good, could we split a truckload? How many pounds is that?

Truckload doesn't make sense. An LFS certainly isn't ordering sand by the truckload. I think it is just a matter of finding the right wholesaler. Usually a resellers license, loading dock and ordering a single pallet on freight is sufficient to lock in really good pricing. But as I said before, my bulk ordering experiences are not SW related.

Problem is that you do have to have a business license and resellers permit to do business with the wholesalers.

I have been trying my hand at making aragocrete pieces for saltwater tanks. You might see a few pieces around town at the local shops. (I use it in all my tanks instead of liverock)
.
One of the things I tried to do was minimize the cost of the aragonite sand for these and I was shocked at how difficult it was to find any.

I tried rock yards, landscape places, online. It is out there and is used for more than just aquariums, but is very difficult to find here on the west coast.

If you do come up with any good sources, I would love to hear about it as I am always on the lookout for good deals on sand.

Yeah, that is what I'm saying. IME, wholesale orders require the following:
1. Business license (very easy to obtain)
2. Resellers license (equally easy to obtain)
3. Loading dock to receive freight (this is the tricky one)

If we have all three of the above, most items can be obtained at full discount if a full pallet is ordered at a time. (of course, the more ordered, the better the freight rate will be).

Identifying the major suppliers is also sometimes quite difficult. I stumbled across a thread about a guy in Texas trying to bulk order Southdown. He may know who the major reef sand wholesalers are. I'll see if I can find that thread again...

When I needed several hundred pounds of Caribsea Sugar Fine Aragonite, I dealt with Steve at Lucky Ocean in SF. He gave me a great price and it was available in a few days.

The irony of it all is that at that time, the Caribsea was stored in a warehouse in Sacramento.

If nothing has changed, the sand you seek is right under your nose (so to speak).

Best of luck,

Roy
