sand

i've read a billion articles about sand. Do i just buy from LFS, or is there a nice cheap alternative. Cant find arg sand anywhere at lowes/HD anymore.

You used to be able to get Southdown from HD/Lowe's. I'm not sure if they carry it anymore or not. You can go into your local HD/Lowe's and ask for it, if they have none, have them contact other stores in the region and see if they have any that you can pick up or have shipped to you. Its much cheaper then the LFS sand, and just as effective. If you can't get nay, likely not these days, best just to look for a fellow reefer breaking down a tank or head to the LFS and lay out the cash.

The lancaster HD, derry street and jonestown road hd harrisburg all have been without southdown for almost 2 years. sad really. I had some that i used for my 75 that sat in the shed for maybe 5 years... sadly its all gone and i too am trying to figure out what I will do.

some people seem to like to use pulverized limestone. not sure. search rc a bit. last pulverized limestone i bought for the lawn was like flour. not sure how that works. must be a much larger grain size than what I am picturing.

I guess i can just transfer the sand in my current tank, but that is going to be a nightmare. i was hoping new sand would be cheap enough instead of the transfer.


i've read about pool filter sand, but still not sure if it is safe or not.

Doubtful... I did find two bags at the Derry st HD last year, buried at the bottom of a pile - it was the brand that bought out southdown.

It's really expensive for what it is, but I don't think theres any safe alternative at this point..
