Hey guys. Remember when south down play sand was the thing to use cause it was like 15 bucks for 50 lbs??

Is there anything like this now-a-days?

I am looking to get a tank started again.

Thanks

I've heard of people using non-specialized silicate free sand on their reef, although I've never seen actual playsand in use.

I used pulverized limestone from one of the big box stores. I don't remember the cost, but it was considerably cheaper than real reef sand. I don't have much experience with other sand, but it seems to me like this stuff blows around easily. I didn't rinse it before I put in the tank. BIG MISTAKE. There is a lot of very small silt like material and every time a new area gets stirred up, there is a major clarity issue that lasts for a couple of hours. If I was starting a new tank, I would use it again. Only this time, I would rinse it very well.
