saving my zoa's

A while ago I asked about my zoa's just floating away and wondered if something was wrong. Got no replies but figured something out. If I take my turkey baster and suction over the zoa's the loose ones will suck right up. THen I glue them down and they don't go anywhere.

Now if I could just figure out why they are breaking off the mother rock......

I would take the loose ones and superglue them onto a piece of rubble. They shouldn't be coming off the original colony like that though.

Revive - I'll have to look that up. I've got a lot of zoa's and platy's but only one colony is falling apart.

Yep I suck them up with the turky baster and glue them to some rubble.

Sounds like it might have been a poor mounting job in the first place, and they are coming loose.

There are also some varieties of zoas that release on purpose. The texas trash palys do this. They will pop up all over the place after settling into your tank. As soon as they get comfortable, they start letting off "future generations" elswhere in the tank.

These weren't mounted they/were covering a 3X5 rock Most grew there on their own.

THey are Dragon's Eyes Bright Green with Orange centers.

Thanks for all the replies.

What kind of glue are you using to attach the polyp directly? I've used super glue gel with little success, so I just put the loose ones in a settling basket full of rubble. The rubble is easy to glue to a plug without hurting/burning the polyp. It would be nice to eliminate waiting for the polyp to attach itself.

I use superglue - make sure it's with CYANOACRYLATE. Put a drop on your pretty dry surface, carefully place the polyp in the glue (bottom down) and then quickly dip in the water - the water sets the glue (or that is what I've been told). seems to work for me.

SPIDERS????

spider info on zoaid.com

they appear just as the name implies - some kind of crustacean that works its way under the mat of polyps and cuts them from the rock.

I use the proper glue - just haven't had success keeping the polyps attached for more than a few days - they let go, probably after getting their 'skin' burned by the glue. So I just wait for the polyps to attach to rubble and glue the rubble to my mount. Just trying to save a step...

I would just put the loose polyps in a plastic cup with rubble in the bottom. The polyps should attach quickly and then you can put them around the tank again.

If you have spiders, you will want to make sure you take care of them quick. They are pesty little buggars.

Thanks, I've looked again for spiders and other pests but I don't see anything but spaghetti worms - how are they? THey are all over the place but the zoa's don't seem to react to them. I'll have to try the little plastic cup idea...

Spegetti worm tenticals can irritate your zoas, and possibly make them close while irritated, but other than that, they are harmless.
