SAVING THE REEF 225g AT A TIME (Build Thread)

Well Guy for those of you that do not know me my name is Robert aka "Rob" or "Bert". I started in this hobby about 3 years ago and have upgraded about 6 times in this order. First it was a 20g then a 24g nano cube then a 60g,100g,110g,180g, and now the 225g.

Well i always wanted this tank but due to living in a small apartment my space was very limited. But finally i am getting my own house so let the dream begin. The Story begins like this. This tank actually belong to a fellow reefer here on RC and i was going to buy it from him. The day i was going to pick it up from him the guys moving the tank out of his house broke it on the front Starfire panel and also the left side.

Here is a picture of how it looked.

So i took it and decided to get it repaired. I got the whole front Starfire replace and the left side panel. And since i was doing that i had them resilicone the whole tank again to make it like new.

And here is what i got back

Well it was sitting at my house for about 2 months waiting for the new place to get ready.

Last night i got my some of my family to help me move the tank to the new house here is some pics from last night.

We had to remove the door to get the tank in the house

BTW i forgot to give specs on the tank. The tank is 72L x 30W x 24H for a total of 225g. Its 1/2 all around and top. the bottom is 3/4 tempered glass. Only the Front Side is Starfire glass.

So this is the wall the tank will go in.

The chandelier will be removed and replaced with a low profile florescent light.

Here is the tank sitting on the dollies

Finally tonight i pushed the tank into its final resting place

So now onto the rest:

i will have about 350 pounds of Sand total and close to 300 pounds of LR with a mix of Fiji, Marshall, Tonga, and a little base.
here is some of the equipment that will be used.

Return Pump is a Dolphin Ampster 2700/3200
Skimmer is a Bubble Master 250
Chiller is a Current USA 1/3
Lights are Aquamedic 3 x 250w with 14k Pheonix DE bulbs also has for T-5 actinic bulbs. For power heads i have one tunze 6060 and a nano stream. But i plan to add two MP40's with battery backup in the next couple months.
Ill add some more tomorrow its past midnight now and time to go to bed :(

Everyone have a good night.

PS. This tank will be full in the next two weeks :D

On the bags of sand it says, not recommended for aquarium use. Hmmmmmmmmmm

Southdown is one of the few brands of play sand I'd actually recommend for using in your aquarium, personally. Yes, it has that label, but most reefers know that if it's silica free (and a trustworthy brand) it'll be just fine.

You will need more flow then just one 6060 and a stream. I have a 6100, 6055, 6045, and 6025 in my 250 and still looking at an other 6100. Just my thought. Tank looks nice! keep up the work.

Tank looks awesome! Is that black silicone?

You gotta get some new curtains tho, pink curtains next to that tank? :p

Rob, tank is nice man. One day i will have one :) i too have the space issue but once i get my own place I will get me a tank like urs. any how call me if u need help.

P.S. I agree with Phyllybean u need new curtains, lmao.

Lol yeah guys i am taking down those curtains for sure. they belong to the previous owner of the house.
As for the southdown yeah it says not intended for aquarium use but thats because the same company was selling to caribsea and would loose money on the other company if they did not put a label like that. But its silica free and its aragonite. Also i did the vinegar test and passes :)

as for flow i have a couple more power heads im also going to add for the meantime. Im just waiting for my tax return so i can get my self the MP40's

As for help yeah im gona need some quick help in the next week after i get my stand. I have a great local welder who is also a hobbiest making me a stand out of two in steel. will also be powder coated. I just need a hand to get this monster on a 42 inch high stand. Ill have Pizza and Beer for those that can help ;)

Along the way if anyone can give advice or comments that would be great.

THanks

PS: Juan ill give you a call a couple days before to let you know when

I would get the tank off those dollies ASAP. That is exactly what I did with my 120 starfire and I woke up to a cracked tank. The pressure on the unsupport middle may cause it to crack. Just a word of advice from my own experience.

Thanks for the advice Solitaryensis ill move the dollies a little more towards the middle to distribute the weight around a little better. i had it on these dollies for the past two months but i also had it sitting on plywood too.

but for piece of mind ill move the dollies around.

Thanks for the heads up.
