Jose i talk to John today looks like our stands are going to be ready on the same day since we are both getting powder coated. Hope i get to see your monster stand :D

Thanks Sp00k :)

hey fellas...how much you getting them stands for...i got a pretty high price...pm me

Looks nice, it's neat how you can really see the difference from the starphire and regular glass in the broken picture.

Only advice I would have... change those curtains! The pink would kill me! :D

yeah i was going to get 3 sided starfire but changed my mind because its going to be on this wall and i only have about 2 and a 1/2 feet of clearance on both sides. so i though it would be a waste.

So i have a question when i get my metal stand what kind of wood do i get to put on the top? do i go for 1/2 or 3/4 plywood. Also any special type of wood that i need. i think i read something about pressure rated wood?? Also over the wood i plan on using some 1/2 foam to ofset any uneven sides of the wood.

Hey Robert,
I would strongly suggest that you spend the money and go to a lumberyard - not one of the big box stores - and buy some 3/4" hardwood (birch) plywood (some call this cabinet grade plywood) and not the cheap ply that they sell at HD or Lowes.

You have a lot of money in this, no reason to go cheap on this.

As for the pressure rated, I have never heard of pressure "rated", but have seen pressure treated wood, but not plywood. This is really used to keep the wood from rotting when out in the elements.

Well i called one lumber yard so far and they told me that a 3/4 inch Birch Plywood with the dims of 4 x 8 for $49.06 thats pretty pricey but piece of mind is worth it. oh and a dollar a cut :)

Should i paint this kind of wood before i put it on? or do i just leave it as it is? there will be some 1/2 foam over it also.

Yea, $50.00 for a sheet is not too bad. Make sure it is at least 9 layers of ply - more is definitely better.
Check with places like Ganahl or better yet, Austin or Orange Coast in Santa Ana, they will both have good ply for you.

As for paint or other finish, I tend to go a little (hahaha) overboard with these things, so I would definitely seal it with something, at the very least a good coat of primer and 1 (but probably 2 or more) coats of a decent paint.

Good luck.

thanks i looked into it i saw some people use Polyurethane gone see into that also.

And Ptan lol see you ask if i was Filipino up there naw but my wife is :D

A small update i went and got all my bulk heads and barb ends to hook up my hoses today. Also picked up 20lbs of live sand to seed it with my Southdown.

Ill update as soon as i get my stand.

thanks all

Hey Rob, nice build. Best price for birch ply is Reel Lumber in Anaheim $37 plus tax. Be sure to cut your holes for returns and overflows first and then seal the ply with primer/paint or several coats of poly.

Thanks Charles. By the way do you have their number i researched it but could not find it.

for the returns my tank has 2 corner overflows so i am gona have to get a 2 inch hole saw to make the holes. or i was thinking of just cutting out a square for the corners. the overflow box is 9x9
what would you suggest is better? To use a hole saw or just cut out a square?

Thanks

rob -- what I did on mine was I cut the size of the overflow out on the top piece of plywood. This way I can get my hand around the nut on the bulk head. If I just cut out the circle I could not get the nut on or off.

I have a great local welder who is also a hobbiest making me a stand out of two in steel. will also be powder coated. I just need a hand to get this monster on a 42 inch high stand.
Rob, I just saw this thread, if it's not powder coated already, have it sprayed with Line-x instead, you won't regret it! Come look at mine :D

I thought my 40" stand was tall, 42" is really tall!

I will be picking up my Metal Stand on Friday during my lunch hour. So ill get the wood on Saturday. and give its some coats of paint that day.
Should be ready to have water in it on Sunday.

Can anyone volenteer 30 minutes of there time to help me put it on the stand. The stand will be 42 inches tall. the tank is already at the new house i just need help to lift it on the stand.
