SC Aquariums Owners Thread

Hi All, I am new to saltwater and wanted to get your guys opinions on my first build. I have only ordered a SCA 150g a few days ago so I am technically not a SC aquarium owner yet. I am starting with an established 120 gallon reef tank(4-5 years old), contents of which will go into the new tank.

After much thought I decided to build a elos-style stand for 150 rather getting the PNP. I am having a local fabricator put together a welded steel frame which I will cover with 3/4" plywood panels. The tubing is 14 guage 1.5" square. Do guys see anything wrong with the design?

I just ordered my 50g pnp - should be here next week! I would like to mod the plumbing to create a more silent operation. Thus far, from reading through the thread I need to order these from drfostersmiths 18985**1" SLIP BULKHEAD KIT
18983**1/2" SLIP BULKHEAD KIT and then also a durso standpipe (where do I get this from?). Also, how do I plumb this to protect against an overflow if the power goes out?

Thanks!

I have heard not to T off the return to add reactors while running a herbie. Have you run into any problems?

Sorry for the delay, life has been crazy and I have not been watching the forums as closely.

To answer your question, that's partly why I had gate valves for the reactors. I don't think it would work at all without being able to finely control how much water I am diverting.

The issue of course is that water I am diverting from going back to the display changes how much the full siphon needs to be restricted.

So yes, things need to be adjusted, but with gate valves those adjustments are small and easy to make. It has not been an issue for me.

If I were you, I would just extend the two shortest pieces of your overflow cut out to expand the width of the tank

Good idea, thanks! Could you guys tell me how big of an overflow cut out I need to make sure the bulk heads fit? Would 6" X 8" suffice? Thanks.

Here is something interesting. I asked Steve at SCA for the dimensions of the overflow box and he responded by saying that this next batch of 150g's is of a new version he hasn't seen yet but it will have 3 bulkheads in the overflow. Sounds like BeanAnimal will be an option for me to consider.

You can have a Herbie setup. 1\2 inch drain is your main drain and 1 inch would be the emergency. In case of a power outage, the water will drop to the bottom of the slits on the overflow (about 1 inch) and overflow will drop to the drain pipe. This is about 2-3 gallons and won't cause an overflow in the sump.

If you want an absolute silent system, you can use the Robertoflow system.

Have fun and share pictures.

I would like to enlarge the 1/2" hole to 3/4" but I have had bad luck working with glass in the past. Hopefully, the extra bulkhead is 1" or 3/4"

OceanWolf, I unfortunately already pickeup a ReefKeeper Elite setup off ebay and I think robertoflow can only be done with a reef angel :headwally: . I do plan to install a float switch in the overflow to cut the pump if its set off. BTW how do you like the Kore 5th doser?

Since I cant find out the size of the new overflow, the stand cant be built until the tank gets shipped in May:sad2:

Makes me wish I waited, lol. Guess I'll have to stick to the Herbie!!
