Schizoculina fissipara

GreshamH, have you ever posted pics of your tank on here? If not, you should, unless RC's strict no-advertisement rules prevents you from doing so.

do you guys have a pic of the coral in your tanks? Would love to see if there are any diff between LA's pic and your own!

He doesn't sell corals, or tanks for that matter, so I don't imagine there would be any issues. Heck, I'd like to see your tank, too, Gresh!

SPStoner is correct. It's no voilation for me to post it :) I've played nice on the forums for a long time, I know the lines not to cross.

I'm in the process of moving it all into a larger system. I'll gladly post pics of that once it's moved, but right now it's not so photogenic, especially with Tony being on the scene

I just lost a nice large tabling acro I've had for numerous years now and it spurred a rather large bryopsis event. I should stop feeding but with the new Schizo in there I don't want to risk it.

Here ya go...just got mine today. The last two shots are tank shots/first two are in a specimen container:

This is what mine looks like after a week and half in my tank. Notice the semi bleaching on the surface. I'm thinking the coral is getting too much light even though it's sitting on my sand about 30 inches from my 400w radiums. I'm going to move it under some shade and see if it colors back up. All tentacles are out at all times so that's a good sign. Anyone else notice bleaching from too much light?

isseym, that is terrible, but I think I'm unfortunately starting to see the same thing starting to happen with my specimen.

Yesterday when I took those pics that "white" spot near the center of the coral is a small living barnacle, and the tissue is dead around it. There is also a small area in the right upper corner that shows some white/bleached tissue as well. The polyps showed some wear and tear from rubbing up against the bag during shipping, and I thought nothing of it. It is nothing that a little TLC can't fix. At least that is what I thought until I saw your coral.

When I checked my coral this morning it showed a white patch that wasn't there yesterday on the top (see recent pic 2nd one). It happened overnight during lights out. Now you have me worried my coral may suffer the same fate as yours.

In these corals offered by LA/DD I have noticed some areas on them that appear white in the pictures they post when they are offered (see 1st pic/not my specimen). It is minimal, and nothing to what you are experiencing though. Maybe Kevin can chime in here and let us know what kind of lighting they are kept under when being held for sale.

An interesting note to point out is that I bought my Schizo on 12/23, and it was supposed to ship out on 12/28. On the shipping day I was notified that the coral I bought has "deteriorated" and that it could not be shipped to me because of LA/DD quality standards. They offered to send me a healthy replacement Schizo coral that was a bit smaller, or to refund my money. I chose the replacement coral.

I hope mine doesn't turn out the same way as your coral has. I have mine at the bottom of a 75 gallon standard aquarium under the far side of a 250w MH bulb.

The only other people besides for you and I on the board that I know of that obtained this coral through DD is ninja and Gresham. Are you guys experiencing any of this white/bleaching in the specimens you obtained through LA/DD? Anyone with any more info please chime in here. Thanks.

I have noticed a certain amount of bleaching on the fringes of my colony. Sorry, I still need to get a camera. I've been keeping my eye on it, and it seems like it has stopped, or at least slowed since it started a couple of weeks ago. Maybe the bleaching isn't a killer though. I'm guessing it is just a case of it loosing zooxanthella. Perhaps it doesn't need that to survive.

Thanks ninja,

On that note I plan on feeding it then every time I spot feed my Archohelia rediviva. Hopefully the heavy feedings will curb the "bleaching" before it gets too bad like isseym's specimen. Time will tell...

Yeah i can't say I have been feeding it directly since I've purchased it, but know that it might be getting too much light since I have 400w metal halides. I have since moved it to a shaded spot in the tank. I'll give it a couple weeks to see if it improves. On the other hand even though there are bleached spots there is nothing dead in terms to the feeding tentacles that come out. They all seem to be quite healthy.

All of the white/bleached areas of my coral have disappeared thankfully. I feed the coral regularly. The white areas have colored up again. The few white "spots" on the coral are small living barnacles living within the polyps.

Mine overall has lightened up, but I don't think it is bleaching. The lightening hasn't progressed over the past few weeks, and the coral still has a noticeable tan color to it. The polyps are out practically 24/7 and they are hungry buggers. The coral has managed to capture and eat large amphipods pretty regularly.

I am going to do some tests on two identical pieces. Maintain one in very low to no light and pound it with food, and maintain the other in moderate light with good flow and offer no food source. I know this will take a bit of time to yield any results, but I would think if the coral is in fact photosynthetic; the low to no light specimen will bleach white with clear or translucent tentacles.

Ill keep you up to speed.

Kevin how are the tests going with this coral?

After I found the white spots I moved it out from under the shade and up to the top where I can feed it easier. Coral is looking a lot better after daily feedings of about 2 weeks. I also have it really really high up in my tank, about 15 inches from 400w radiums.

That's good to hear issey!
