Scholarships

As a college bound student , applying for applications and scholarships is becoming increasing common. I am wondering if maintaining an saltwater aquarium has a reputation that these reviewers are looking for , and are there any aquarium specific scholarships .
I live in the fort worth area and I am planning on attending Texas Tech or Texas A&M.

NO !

if you have money to spend on such an expensive hobby, you do not need more.

now if you were writiing articles, and going to study marine biology then ...

If your university has a marine biology program or department that you are joining, it's fine to mention. Otherwise you need to think carefully about how you incorporate it into an application. For example, no cares that you keep a reef tank. However, they might be interested that you've learned aquatic chemistry, some physics, basic electronics, or ecology. With applications, it's always how you relate yourself to what they are looking for.

Oh and good luck!

^ Agreed. A typical college won't care that you can grow corals or keep a fish alive, but they might care that you built and programmed your own Arduino controller.

If you are really looking for scholarship money, contact everyone. You'd be surprised who gives money to college students, my electric company will give a $2000 per year scholarship to any student whose parents have them as a utility company. There are tons of programs like this, you just have to find them. Your school counselor or adviser should know of any local programs like these.

And look at your parents work too. Many work places award scholarships to a handful of their employees children getting ready to go to college. I won a scholarship through my step-father's workplace. If you are going to college this fall, you have actually probably missed out on most of the scholarship opportunities. Most of them have probably already been awarded at this point. When I was a senior in high school, I started applying for scholarships in the fall of my senior year, and I think most scholarships have already been awarded by May or earlier, but I get the feeling that you aren't going this fall since you don't know if you are going to Texas Tech or Texas A&M. If you are not going to college this year, then good for you for getting a jump on the scholarships. And I agree that most scholarsip committees won't care that you keep a marine tank. They might take an interest in DIY projects that you have done. I would not mention the aquariums at all for any need-based scholarships. If it's an academic scholarship, then if you've done any cool DIY projects (built your own LED light, etc), they might be interested in something along those lines. DIY projects do show some initiative and a willingness to put the time and work into making something.
