SCMAS ?

It is odd to see what is going on in the other threads recently, but it is not something unfamiliar to this club if I recall correctly. The last time I tried to get involved in this club was when it was first formed after separating from RMRC. But like most new things, it was not as smooth as you might have hoped for. Since then, this club has grown in size quite a bit for a little town land locked in the middle of the United States. It was a good idea to be a separate club in Colorado, there is obviously enough people in the southern part of this state to support it.

But with the growth of anything there are also the pains that one may have to go thru. My interest in the hobby has become more in-depth lately, and I have again tried to become involved with the SCMAS. The problem is that both my interest in this hobby and the club I would like to be more involved in are both experiencing these growing pains, and my first instinct was to just back away and let things try to fix themselves. But that is not a very good answer, not in a fish tank or a fish club. When we have algae, we don’t let it take over; we do water changes, check or water parameters, buy algae eaters, and we come here to ReefCentral and ask all our reef friends, we ask all of you!

We are as far away from the ocean as we could get on this continent, so sticking together to get things that so many others can get readily on the coast is important. The reason I want to be in the club is to be informed as to what is going on in this hobby, to see other tanks and livestock, to learn how to become better at keeping fish and coral alive, and maybe even breed clownfish (haha, I will never attempt that after seeing what all you have to do).

The problems within the club are unknown to me, but things are slowly leaking out into the public onto this forum, and that really does not seem to be the place for it, but perhaps it is. Maybe some of the burdens of the club board should not be kept solely on the shoulders of these members. We have a lot of smart people that read what is posted here, and I am sure regular members can help, but we have to be aware of them. If there is a conflict in personalities, then that should be worked on in private.

Personally, I am looking for certain things out of a club. The most important has been taken care of by ReefCentral, a place to communicate. This forum is beyond anything any other club could ask for. We have more knowledge within these pages that any other hobby I have ever been apart of, and as long as you know how to read between the lines well, you will find your answers. A club should also have a newsletter of some kind in my opinion. This would be a place to outline who does what in the club. It would also have information about upcoming events the club will be having as well as events that this hobby is having. Now, because we are all internet savvy, I would say the best newsletter would be a website. Unfortunately, this cost money, but we have no place to call our own, and having a sense of ownership can be important. It makes things real, official, and professional; right now we are on someone else’s dime here, and that just doesn’t make the club feel very official.

I want to help make the club something enjoyable to be apart of. I would like to see things clearly laid out. Both these things should easily be accomplished, but the growing pains may be getting in the way a bit from what I have read lately. What can be done to get this to happen?

I believe a club website will be very high on the new boards
priority list, the by-laws call for the creation of one. This is
defined under the communication liason duties. I would ask everyone please be patient with this, it is the first time we have had an election and we are trying to work some bugs out.

What can be done to get this to happen?

Once there is an election there will be a board that the club has ownership in, that will change the dynamic. It seems when we have to discuss club matters on the forum it is like a tooth pulling session for a time. Well, hopefully this is the last tooth we have pulled for sometime...

You are also right...personality conflicts should be worked offline.

Perhaps this club is meant to run itself. We seem to do very well with group buys as they come up; this forum has allowed us to easily setup such things. It is very nice to go in with a bunch of people locally and order from the big dogs on the Internet and save money on shipping, plus it keeps us familiar with each other. But going to the next level has always seemed to cause problems, and that could possibly be from not needing to go that next step or not knowing how to.

The meetings are nice I am sure, face to face communication is always better then text on a website that leaves too much room for bad interpretation. It is always hard to say what you mean without the physical communication of body language, or the carry over of the tone in a persons voice, these are fundamental in any good conversation. But with e-mails and PM being sent back and forth, too much is lost and the point can get easily missed, and I think that is a lot of what has happened over the years here.

Unless we have some very active members that honestly want to take this club to the next level, I would say it might be better off without a board. This would mean that monthly meetings may have to stop, and only when a member wants to have a little house party, or host a frag swap would we end up meeting. I for one would love to host a meeting, and as long as I give everyone enough of a heads up, it should happen, but it would be with my own money. I only suggest this because money can be the root of many problems in a club that is free to be a part of.

We have proven over and over again that we can setup group orders and everyone is happy with the results, we could easily do the same thing for meetings. Maybe someone is making a sump out of acrylic and they would not mind people coming over one day to watch them do their thing as they explained some of the basics. Or there could be someone with a 600 gallon tank that you could just stand in front of for hours and watch. We ask some questions, they give us answers of basic maintenance they do, and we all keep watching the fish. Even someone with a frag tank that is about to cut up some Zoas and SPSs could host a meeting to show people what they do. There is so much value in seeing the process first hand over reading about it in a book that I would go to every one of these things, and we don’t need a board to get this done, we just need EVERYONE TO STAY IN THE CLUB HERE!

There would be no sponsors in such a club, and there would be no discounts to us from any stores. We should never feel obligated to one place because of such an arrangement, but go to the stores we like and then feel free to talk about it here on the forums.

I think it is important that no one stops posting here, your information is too important to us all. No matter if you have a 10 gallon tank or 600 gallon tank, your information is wanted. No one should feel they have to step aside or stop coming here, the purpose of this forum is to have a place to enjoy the hobby and to gain experience for our friends that also enjoy the hobby. I would rather take a step back and have that then to move forward and lose anyone.

questin i love the way you put it!! i tried saying the same thing!!!

no board but they didnt seem to like that!!! so i just go with the flow

Questin,

You make some good points, but if don't have an organizational structure, Reefcentral will take away our forum. To have a forum here you must be a legitimate club, that holds regular meetings, and contributing in a positive way Reefcentral and to the hobby. We also have our membership in MASNA to consider.

Questin I loved your first lengthy post but your second I didn't fully agree with. Why call ourselves a club? We could all just convein over in a different forum, why have SCMAS? why do speakers?
we would be nothing more than a bunch of reef freaks talking online like half a million others.
Some of us want more and are willing to take the time to do it.

I guarantee most of you don't want to spend any time or effort to help, you simply want to post little comments to egg on the griping and you really don' thave what it takes in life to go forward either in my opinion.

This problem with the club should make everybody take a hard look at your life, your dedication level and your expectations from this hobby.

I wish someone would tell me to shut the hell up and move on, because frankly I feel Todd and I are about the only ones who Give a Sh*t here and It's getting to the point I don't know if I want to use up my resources if there is nobody in the club that cares.

Maybe I should just go away and cry myself to sleep over nothing?
Let me know, nobody is saying Sh*t to me here, I need a little feedback, let it fly.

You want feedback - I'll give you feedback. I CARE! Thats all I got Chris LOL J/K but thats about all thats worth the effort at this point. Things have been beaten to death and I'm ready for it to be over!

I agree with you on the lack of wanting to help by some, and I think we are at that either we do go to the next step or it is not going to go on any more.

My second post was about an option that is out there, but I would rather see this whole thing taken to the next level. The problem now is that we are seeing people leave that have given to the club, and I would rather they stay and try to help get it to that next level.

The problem I have right now is that I am new to being involved with this club. I do not know about everything that has happened, I do not know about the requirements this club is held to in order to maintain it’s status as a club, and I honestly don’t know what the clubs status as a member of ReefCentral and MASNA gets us, but does it really get us that much if all we have to do to become a member is attend two meetings?

I have talked about a website a few times now, and if you need someone to make it, I can do that, and it would be a professional looking. Also, the Office Live idea I think is a good one, and it looks like a Microsoft product that I already know fairly. So I could easily do that too.

I just need time to figure out what all is going on so I know where best to help.

Hey Chris Todd says your surprise is that your buying everyone in the reef club 600 gal tanks?!?!?! WOOHOOOO Us first!

thanks rekn LOL
Todd you are cool as usual :)
questin, come to the meeting I want to talk to you about the website, I built my own website last year. I think everybody needs a website these days, it almost a requirement!
I'd love to give you the chance to build one, they are so cheap to maintain that its a no brainer to me.
I am not running for pres. but me and Todd pretty much see eye to eye on most everything.
Keep the ideas coming.
Chris

I know that i cant be a member do to my work but i would love to help eney way i can im with Questin all i want is to meet new people and see the tanks thay have.

Thank's Lin for offering what you can, I plan to petition the board for more member involvement, it will get everybody closer and make the board members lives easier I think.
Most all the larger more established clubs really get the members involved, sometimes they make you work your A$$ off. But hey, afterall it's everybodys club so thats only fair :)
Chris

Hey guys, due to my work situation I have not been able to keep up with what is going on, sOOOO I have no idea WTheck has happened over the past couple of days, but seems some DRAMA has arrisen in the relm of neptune. (Hey i've had a couple of beers, bear with me). I have had a lot of fun at the few meetings I have gone to, and being relatively new to this whole thing, thought we all got along pretty well. I really enjoy the information I have gained from all the members (especially Todd, down here in P-town) and think it is sad that we have members bailing out. Surly we can "all get along" and work our differences out. I don't have the time to dedicate to being on the board or the knowledge quite frankly, but hope that we can pull ourselves up by the bootstraps, nut up (sorry ladies) and act like the big boys and girls we are. (and no I am not trying to slam on anyone here, I just get a little weird when I drink, lol) Calvin, you can't leave, I just wont let you, I will issue a warrant for your arrest, lol. I agree with reefkoi as far as sharing the work load. There hasa got to be something, even a little thing, that I as a complete retard in the relm of aquatics, can do, even if it is only to arrest the fleeing members of this club, lol. I guess what I am saying is "give peace a chance." Later

I'm just glad I am not the only one here that drinks and post's :)
It's funny to read someones drunken post, do I sound that way ?
Funny.
Chris

yeah, reading this today, i think I should be banned from posting after drinking, sorry for the rant and hope no one took it personal.
