scoly prices

Are the prices so high because they are a current hot item or because they are very difficult to get? Do you guys think the prices will go down?

I'm convinced that prices will pretty much never go down on any corals anymore. So much hype, LE's, Tyree's, aussie's, etc. have cleared the way to charge whatever people want. As long as the coral looks nice, you're going to get gouged for the maximum amount online.

I dont think supply and demand even factor in anymore. The vendors make so much profit selling just one piece, they can eat 10 others and still come out ahead. There is no incentive whatsoever to lower prices. Just let it sit in a tank, take some highly photoshopped pics, have buddies start 10 threads on here about how "rare" the coral is and wait for a sucker to come by and pay the exorbitant price.

If you dont think that is true, just check any of the pic threads. A surprisingly large number of the people posting pics in those threads have been "moved on" and almost all because their posts were really just schills to drum up their own sale threads.

I have a regular scoly. I paid about $70 locally, but it was about 6" across. I really enjoy this coral.

You do pay a whole lot more for the brightly colored Australian scolys.

I think prices are high because people are willing to pay that much. I just can't bring myself to pay $200+ for a coral.

I bought this one from my LFS about a month ago the price was $200 for 5 months, I just waited untill they couldn't stand how much room this thing was taking up. I bought it for $100 you may or may not think this is a good price but around here it's good, I was told that these guy's are going to be outrageous in the next couple of years so I nabbed it. this pic is the day I got it, it's twice as large now that it has aclimated.

Corals b4 bills, yours is commonly called a scolymia but it's probably actually a cynanira. Does it have large teeth when retracted or small?

His pic is a scoly for sure.

The expensive scolymia are the aussies. Mostly because they cost a ton more to get in than the indo scolymias. Until that changes, I would expect the pricing on those to stay the same.

Yes it has teeth, is mine aussie or indo pacific?

Indo. The ones in Rev's red favia thread pic next to it are aussie scolymia. They are the $200-$300 dallar ones.

Corals b 4 Bills ,it is a cynanira. I have the same one i picked up awhile ago but mine has a little more orange. Paid 60 for it.

They are popular, but there aren't alot that you see. I'm not saying they're rare, but they are abundant either. Plus they aren't fragable.

I've seen them go on ebay for less then $100. These are the green and orange aussie ones.

A cynarina isn't that meaty/fleshy. They look very similar, but this is a cynarina. Pic is a little big, but has nice detail, where you can tell the difference from the above scolymia pic.
