Scooter Blenny in 10g

So I was looking around for a fish for my 10g mixed reef. Been set up for about 7 months. A guy at my LFS recommended a scooter blenny. I initially said, "no way, those only eat live food." He replied, ours eat frozen. So he showed me and the 3 blennies in the tank went to town on spirulina-brine, also said they eat Rod's. I was very surprised and thought it was very interesting and would love to get one. Has any body had success on a scooter that would eat prepared food? Anyone have some input on this?

I've never had one, but heard that they do better than mandarins do on frozen. as long as you're willing to feed everyday, and watch to make sure they get their share, I dont see why it wouldnt work.

I have one that eats hikari mysis (and almost all will). However you will need to feed multiple times per day because it is difficult to provide for all of their needs with frozen/prepared food. These fish normally graze on copepods.

I have one that is eating NLS pellets now and I just got another one a week and a half ago that is just now starting to eat pellets. I find them to be fairly easy to convert over to prepared foods. But you do need to feed several times a day to maintain a healthy weight on them.

Ok, well this sounds pretty good so far. They did readily accept the brine, I feed twice a day anyway so that's not a problem in terms of feeding them. Do you guys think a 10g is enough room for them? I know they don't move around a whole lot.

I think a 10g should be fine; I've never seen them bigger than an inch and a half two inches long. plus, they dont really swim, more like they "scoot" (hence the name).

Yeah I know they don't swim around a lot. there isn't really any open sand in my tank though. Everything is either covered in LR or coral... All my LR is pretty much covered in coral too. I don't think the scooter would be happy in the tank I decided. Not enough room in the sand for him to scoot around in. They also are the biggest I've ever seen, almost 2 inches I'd say. Might just get a neon goby... even though I don't think they are nearly as cool.

Wise choice. When I first started, I tried a scooter in a 10 gallon tank. He ate mysis and even pellets, but it wasn't enough and I lost him.

I think a single scooter in a 10 is definitely doable. I'd try to get a female which will stay smaller. Males will easily get 3". I had one in one for about a year and was able to keep it fat. But it is a commitment. I have a m/f/f harem now and I love them. Always out, scoot, scoot, scootin' about.

You have to feed heavily (mysis and prawn roe are recommended) and turn off the flow for 1/2 hour or so while they pick. 2 feedings like this per day should sustain the fish.
