Scuba diving with fmas

I know its probably menial but the way they promo'ed this at the meeting was that the equipment was included..... are we renting equipment? When they said this included the equipment I take it they meant this included renting of the equipment.

New equipment could cost as much as $1,000. Even renting of equipment is pretty expensive. To be included is pretty good. I did think that the way Worth worded it at the meeting that some people might think they were getting free equipment, but I thought they clarified it there. If you head to a dive resort on vacation it will be all rental equipment, but I still don't think they mean mask and snorkel and probably fins. You sure need to buy your own since you have to look and find one that does not leak on your face.

Matt is correct. You are borrowing/renting the equipment for the course, including the mask and fins.

He is also correct that scuba equipment is expensive to buy. It usually isn't a good idea to buy right off the bat until you've tried a few different pieces of equipment and feel comfortable with what you buy. Scuba equipment will lasts a very long time so its a long term investment (Ive had my regulator, octopus, and computer for >20 years, and its still in good shape).

Mask and fins are not a huge investment, and again Matt is correct, you need to be comfortable with it. With this course you dont have to buy either, but if you feel compelled to buy something, this is the smarter way to go initially (IMHO).

This is a great deal for those that can do it. Those that are wanting to buy new gear. I would try to wait for the next fmas meeting so you can talk to Worth or the first scuba classroom session.

Typically a part of the course talks about equipment and selection. You may want to find out if that is the case and hold out on buying mask, fins and snorkel. They may have even worked out some sort of discount with a local dive shop for you guys. If not Diver's Direct Prices can be tough to beat. SCUBASWORLD in Miami also has great prices as well. Although most of their stuff will be geared toward spearfishing.

In speakin with Worth he is suggesting the Beach dives be held during the day on the weekend (last 2 days). Very likely 8am-12pm. Pool dives will be the precedding Friday. In other words 3 academic, pool, then ocean for 2 days.

so the actual schedule is

May 18th Tuesday 6pm-9pm
May 19th Wednesday 6pm-9pm
May 20th Thurs. 6pm-9pm
May 21st Fri. 6pm-9pm (pool Dives)
May 22nd Sat. 8am-12noon (beach Dives)
May 23rd Sun. 8am-12noon (beach dives)

NOT May18th thru 23rd 6pm-9pm

i assume this applies to the other session dates as well

Well that puts me out. i have to work Saturday :(

Emilio why don't you see if that checkout dive could be rescheduled?

No vacation coming? It is a great price what Worth is charging. I paid $350.00 about 20 years ago. I would jump all over this if I wasn't already certified. Plus I think it would be more fun with people you already know. When I got certified everyone was a couple except for me and another guy. Mike was deployed to the Philippines. It was a little odd, especially the buddy breathing! Eew!! Not to mention the part where we had to take out our regulator and bite through a huge stalk of kelp. Just nasty, nasty, nasty. This was in Monterey Bay and they did this so that people wouldn't panic if they or their tanks got caught up in it. Whoever does take the course I am sure will have lots of fun.

Lil- If your serious I will ask Aquanauts to find alternate dives for you. Please note you MUST have the openwater dives to become certified.

Let me know.

can i go on the beach dive too? i will be doing this certification for my fiance, as im already certified. can we tag along on the beach dives? i guess i can ask this at the next meeting.....

Eddie
can my 19 year old son and my brothers 15 year old go? or do they have to be members

19 year old yes, 15 year old i think yes, but I will have to check on with Aquanauts. Regarding Memebership, yes they have to be members. Family memebership is only $10 more than single memebership. and student memebership is only $10.

Someone backed out of Session 2 starting this coming Tuesday.

We have 2 available spots.

Classes are starting this Tuesday May 4, 6pm-pm, ending on Friday, then 2 days of diving Sat and Sun classes for the final beach dives from 8a-12p for the full PADI certification in Open Water Diving. $200 including all gear and books.

LMK.

My son is in the first class. They had a delay and took their test Friday night instead of the pool. So they did the pool on Saturday and the first two dives on Sunday morning. They are supposed to complete the last dive this weekend, maybe with you guys on Sunday.

I sat in on a lot of the class' and took some pics in the pool and the first beach dives. I hope to get some of the pics up tonight. My son is hooked on this and can't stop talking about it. Worth is a very thorough and friendly teacher, he knows his stuff and is very patient. I would recommend him to anybody. I wish I had him as a teacher when I got certified back in 85.

The class has been nothing but AWESOMENESS! Starting Tuesday with no diving experience to Saturday in the pool and Sunday 35' deep looking at huge 2' angelfish off of Oakland was amazing.

Still have to finish last two dives this next weekend and I am sooo excited. Worth is an amazing instructor with a great passion for teaching.

Have to say thanks to FMAS for setting this up!

-Matthew

We still have a few more open spots for this coming session, May 18-23. Please tell everyone you know if interested. Even by joining FMAS for 10-20 bucks they are still getting a good deal.
