Sea Hare for Rent!

I bought a Sea Hare two weeks ago at All About Fish, and it's devoured ALL my hair algae.

I've since moved my system to a temporary prop tank, and it's so sterile right now I have no hair algae growth anymore.

Eventually, I'm sure I'll get some kind of phosphate problem and get more hair algae, so instead of selling him or letting him starve, if anybody wants to borrow him, let me know!

He's a for sure hair algae eater, so if you have a hair algae problem, this may be what you're looking for!

I know some sea hares don't eat hair algae that well, but this one does.

All I ask is a tiny frag of something fun.

I did the same thing last weekend. Bob at All About Fish told me to bring it back when the problem was solved. You should see if they will help you out. Normally they don't accept marine returns but, for regular customers, they have been known to bend the rules.
 
yeah, bob told me I can bring it back. but i like this one =P just don't have food for him at the moment, and I know I'll screwup nutrient export somehow soon, so he'll come in handy again.

hehe. how's yours doing?
 
They take out green and red hair algae? I might need one at some point. Don't have time to swing by for a rental. How much do they usually run? Totally reef safe?
 
mine was $10 I think. Not expensive at all.

Totally reef safe? I think so, they're herbavores, though mine was so hungry he took a byte out of a mushroom I had =/ but moved on.

I'm going to take him back tomorrow if nobody wants to rent =(
 
Hey Art, you're supposed to be able to feed them boiled lettuce and dried kelp.

Might give that a try before sending him back to the store.
 
I had one for 4 1/2 months, after clearing up my caulerpa and HA problem... I supplemented is diet with NORI... he would also scrounge off the rocks. It would also TRY to go after turf, did not know if he was able to get it though...

just watch out for your PH.....I was able to rescue him the 1st time but not the 2nd. I love having these buggers around cool things.... the ink dye they secrete is more of an irritant to other marine animals than a poison that some cukes have.....
 
sid007 is probably going to pickup the seahare, otherwise it goes to aaron (ac green).

It'd be curious how to tell if they are "starving" so that you know to suppliment the Seaweed, I'm really tempted to pick one up, as much as I'd like to "rent" Arts, I would really feel uncomfortable if I killed it :)
 
hehe yeah, sorry I guess I should just sell it. I feel bad because a couple people were afraid to rent it because they didn't want to kill it, especially if I'm so attached to it. It's pretty ugly, but heck, I love this... slug...!

But I think sid700 is just going to buy it from me, and if I need it again I can buy it back, etc.

Anyway, I think the more it moves, and the less it poops, the hungrier it is. That's my observations so far. When I first got it, it started eating hair algae like crazy, then for two days, it pooped and just sat in the same place. Now it's always on the move, pooping a little, but not nearly as much. Yes, I do stare at my tank for like 15 minutes at a time in between working =P

But they're inexpensive, and reef safe, I'd recommend you guys try one! Just be sure to have an exit plan for when it's done eating all the hair algae.
 
I don't have much hair algae at all is my "problem", it's more so that brown film algae that covers rocks. I'm tempted to yank the rock and just scrub it, it's really popping up where I put a new bulb in... spectrum went from a 12000k bulb to a 10000k bulb and I think that all the algae likes it!
 
If you rent him out just make sure the tanks are hare safe.

My first one investigated a powerhead too closely!!

My current one (Shrek 2) is great aswell but I have now idiot proofed the tank!

ooh, They probably eat all sorts of algae... though the only kind I had was hair.

sorry to hear about the algae problem =(( hopefully a sea hare will help out if you decide to get one.

lol shrek!! nice name =) Mine hasn't gotten caught in my 4 seio's yet... that would suck.

yeah they got good girth and length. it's pretty gross. I saw my flame angel try to eat the poop coming out. Grossed me out.
 
ewww... my brown sea cucumber *laugh* has nice little sand cylinders it poops, but bleh..

makes me wonder how useful these will be... eat the algae but poop later to feed the new algae :)
 
the poop look like cylinder type rabbit food pellets... biege colored... and they poop like hell.... ampipods bloomed after I got this dude.....
 
Wow, you should post a pic of this particular heroic algae eater, so that other people who are out of rental range can pick one up!
