sea hare

I have had a sea hare in my tank for about 3 months. he seems fine and I can not get alot of information about them everything I read is mixed. if anyone has any good advice about them and could send my way~ thanks

great alogea eaters but once your algea diminishes get him out! hell die without lots of algea. offer him to a friend for algea contral and maybe down the line youll need him again and your friends will return the favor. for real if it is not moving and your algea is low get him out asap!

as far as care when they are happy and have enough food: easy. like any invert/slug/ snail. need some iodine occasionally and ph needs to be on at all times. basically easy to care for but 99% death is from starvation. so if he isnt loking good in futuer it doesnt mean tank bad but seahare starving possibly..to consider.

but I have no one who does saltwater and I noticed that he eats the green seaweed that the tangs eat. will you help me find him a home

I can take him for a while. I have some algae that seriously needs cleaning. My rabbit fish won't touch it. You can suppliment their diet with Nori if insufficient algae in the tank.

We had 2 of these guys and they are great. Wife said they were so ugly they were cute. Advice you got is true. Nori is the seaweed that sushi is wrapped in but you can get algae sheets at the LFS

Can also simply use the Nori sold a Price Chopper/Hanaford.

ok ,yeah he does eat that already from the tang. he always makes a mess with it and the little guy always is cleaning it up.

Is your sea hare really 'little' guy? Ive only seen huge ones. They are so nasty looking they fascinate me. I wish I had one when my HA was out of control.
Piece of advice, keep your power head and filter intakes covered with a screen. My boyfriend lost his sea hare to the power head, but fortunately he didnt ink or get too chewed up. Could have been a horrible mess!

I could use a seahare for a few weeks to clean up my 10 gallon algal farm. it has been overran by some filimentious hair alga and the hares usualy chow that stuf right down.

if you want him I will give you him. he s agood size and I just want him to go to a good home. he has never caused a problem or has inked in my tank. I have moved him and he had ni problem. if you want him I will bring him on sat

I know before when I got him I knew i could only keep him for a short while. but his food source is running out. up at eddies they told me they die in a month. that was nice. anyway I just want to give him a nice place to live with alot of fod. I read anothers reef keeper who swore by them for hair alge. they are better then snails(all my snails get eaten by my hermit crabs

They ink? I never knew that. If they do is that a major concern like a cuke dying and releasing all those toxins?

Yes they can ink. Messy stuff. Keeps lots of carbon in case it happens.
Dave if you want to give it a go first, go for it. Pass him on to me after- or we can do it the other way around.

yeah that would be cool Cruella. Please bring it to the sat meeting.

Mike, it should make quick work of my 10 gallon's alga if it is good sized. I could have it to you by the first weekend of June :)
