sea horse and pipefish in a reef???

Greetings, I have had a reef for quite a while 4 + years, and my girl friend would like to try a seahorse.

I studied and read this forum for a year before my first saltwater tank, and i plan to do plenty of reading and learning before I try a seahorse, my first question is....

are seahorses okay to have in a mixed reef, LPS, SPS, and softies...

or how about a tank dominated with macro alge?

They are much more suited to tanks with Macroalgae. They generally do not do well in reef tanks because the water flow is usually too high and they often are outcompeted by other fish for food.

Seahorses also require temperatures much lower than standard reef temperatures or they get sick and die. Seahorses really need a dedicated system and intensive maintenance.

There are a few pipes that might work for you. Look into the blue lined pipefish. They stay small but are pod eaters so a refugium is a must, especially if you can't get it to eat prepared food (mine never has).

I never had good luck with the blue stripes in my reef and I have a full functioning refugium. I tried them twice. I even had 2 that ate cyclopese and only lasted about a month. Currently I have 2 dragon face pipes in my reef and are doing great so far. They are both eating frozen foods and always picking at the rocks. its been about a month so far...so hopefully it will work out
