then I look it up on Saltwater.com and read this>>>

Palythoa produce palytoxin, one of the most potent poisons known to science. For this reason one should take care when handling them. Don't handle if you have cuts or open wounds and make sure to clean your hands after handling.

Yes it is true. You need to be cautious when handling any palythoa. I try to use gloves whenever I am handling them. If I can not use gloves for some reason I immediately wash my hands and anything my hands touch from my tank to the sink

And definately don't rub your eyes after handling them, even if you've washed your hands a few times! I had washed my hands 3x after handling palys. Dug something out of my eyes & they swelled up & crusted so bad I couldn't open them in the morning for 3 days, w/o soaking them 1st.

Mine look a little more flat and the 2nd pic looks more cup shaped. So dp you guys/gals think they are the same?

Just a little tip, go buy a box of latex exam gloves from Walreen's. Anytime your working with paly's/zoo's wear them. You never know what type of reaction you can have.

True. Althouth I prefer not to use gloves, I did have a couple of cuts on my knuckles on a day I fragged some palys & both got red, inflamed & gunk was coming out of them for a few days.

Few interesting excerpts from the site are,

"Palytoxin is the most toxic natural product known, it is estimated that the lethal dose for a human is less than five micrograms. "

dont touch anything. about a month ago i lost sensation in my lips and face...and this was after washing my hands....go figure.

i always wear gloves now.

This is was an often discussed topic on NR.com. There are some sources that say that palytoxins are limited to a few specific sp of coral and others that say it present in more reef animals than you might think.

Here is an interesting thread on the topic:

Palytoxin lit link

When starting the hobby I was a bit concerned about it. ...and when first setting up a reef I had used some uncured Haitian live rock that still have a various polyps on it amung other things. After my initial aquascaping I developed a rash on my right arm (the one I had in the tank most) that got me worried enough to head to the ER fearing some sort of palytoxin.
In retrospect, the cause was likely a bristle worm.
I did quite a bit of manipulation to the rock (cutting, splitting and drilling) to build my 'scape. All of which with bare hands. I made note of several worms that were found and met their demise as I drilled and split rock (along with the worms).. not realizing that I was also in the process of creating bristle soup in the tank that left me with an odd tingling sensation later that day and a nasty rash on my arm that ran up to exactly the point I had that arm under the water line.

I wore gloves when working in the tank religiously after that.. till they ripped. I've not used them in well over a year and even moved the entire set up bare handed again last month.
So, since it seems I don't learn from my own mistakes everyone stay tuned for my next trip to the ER.
:p
