Sea slugs

Does anyone have a website thay they know of that is good for ID'ing slugs? I discovered one in my tank this weekend that's about 2-3 inches long and brown, and almost looks like it has little plates on his back. It's really hard to get a picture of it since I never know where it's at. I've had the tank running for 2 full years stocked, and haven't noticed it before. Not sure how something like that could be missed every day for 2 years, but...

If I can get a pic I will post it, but until then I was hoping that someone had ideas for where to look online for a possibly ID.

BTW, it's evidently a very hardy little critter because my tank, about 2 weeks ago, had a heater malfunction. I caught it as it was hitting 95 degrees. I lost all of my coral, and mushrooms, but the fish survived and the polyps made it. One little anemonie just barely survived.

The 'little plates on his back' makes me think he might be a Chiton.

They're almost impossible to see when you're not specifically looking for them.

Looking at pics of the two, it does seem to lean more to the chiton side. I'd take a picture of it, but it's impossible to find if I am looking. It just happens to come out once in a while...

Sorry for the late reply - Chitons are for the most part reef safe. I've read that a very few species can possibly try to trap small fish, but I think the overwhelming majority of the numerous species are perfectly fine.

I have a Chiton in my tank and he's the bomb. He scrapes rocks clean of EVERYTHING - hair algae and cyno included. Well, everything but coral. If I ever see another one at the pet store and they're able to safely remove him from the glass/rock, I'm for sure picking it up.

Bottom line, I wouldn't worry about the Chiton. Hope that helps
