Hi-

I purchased a Red Sea Star (Fromia Milleporella) from Lfs yesterday and he's barely moved since I got him. I can tell that his little legs under his arms are starting to attach to sand bed. My 75 gallon tank is 6 months old with a Yellow tang, Common Clown, Mcoskers Wrasse, Yellow Watchman Goby, and a Benggai Cardinal. The tank parameters are-

Ammonia- 0
Nitrite- 0
Nitrate- 10
Ph- 8.3
Dog- 10

Fromia Milleporella is just doing what it does best. Starving.

These species are not suitable for home aquariums unforunately, yet they're still collected. They eat the bio-film only found is very, VERY established tanks, and need a constant supply which isn't easily providable. In very large 300 gal displays it's possible to keep them, but anything smaller and the outcome usually leads to eventual starvation (although some of us have succeeded in creating biofilm for them to eat).

I've had one for about a year, in my 55 reef... he loves it, he loves me and sends me birthday cards... there are days that he never seemed to move from a spot and days that he's all over the tank...Your guy will move, give him some time, most times when adding new species they seem to pick a spot for a day or two.

It's doomed, I'm afraid. There are a few reports of fromias surviving in small tanks, but it's very rare and nobody's quite sure what causes it. Yours is probably already starving from the retailer's tank, I don't think it's going to recover.

It's not dead quite yet, survival is a possibility, however the odds of long term survival are.. to say the least.. almost as good as winning the lottery.
