I have 4 on my 500gal tank that have been running for over 6 years with no issues. 2 of these used to be on my 90 gal before the current build. I am very pleased with their effects for random currents from my return lines.
Question for those that use these. I was considering placing one in the front right corner. The second would be in the rear 12 inches from the left corner( over flow is in the left corner). I was thinking direct the flow of the rear on to the front glass and the front right corner on to the corals. It's is my understanding they only rotate 90 degrees. Good or bad idea?
Sea Swirls or better yet the new Sea Sweeps are awesome because they allow you to use a lot smaller pump or powerhead and still cover the whole tank with water movement, and they are built like tanks with 10 years or more of life expectancy. They are very popular with local reefers in Fairfield County CT and Westchester County NY.
I had them for 7 years, got rid of them, and I have regretted not putting them on my current tank so much that I recently bought 2 of the new Sea Sweeps to use with my Tunzes. It is my "one guy opinion" that the variable flow they create helps make coral formations more "natural" looking, meaning tables table and bushy acros bush, plus there is no better way to insure that flow reaches every corner of a reef than to continually sweep the whole tank. I am becoming convinced that we are way over emphasizing the amount of flow that SPS need. I think it's not about the amount of flow it's about insuring there are no dead spots in and around growing corals. Conversely I think it's just as important to have "cryptic zones" in different areas as well, but all of that has little basis in science yet and is just one dude's personal observations and thoughts.
