Seachem Matrix vs MarinePure blocks/spheres

After talking with Pife this weekend at the swap and spending way too many work hours on RC reading about these biofiltration options, I've decided that this stuff might work better for me than the rocks I've got in my sump right now. They just seem to collect detritus anyway.

It looks like Matrix and MarinePure are basically the same. Do you guys who use them have any specific preference as to which one?

Pife said he's got Seachem Matrix in a basket in his sump. He also said he feeds a ton and this stuff has helped control both nitrates and phosphates. I think he actually said if he doesn't feed as much as he does he has trouble keeping any nitrates or phosphates in the system at all.

Pife, if I misunderstood, let me know.

They basically do the same job, just give a place for denitrification bacteria to grow. Put it in the lowest flow area you can and give it a few months. Pond Matrix is bigger then regular Matrix, and typically preferred for this purpose.

I have 3 of the MarinePure blocks in my sump. Ive been happy with them so far. I do have prolly 400 lbs. of live rock as well. I've been thinking about getting a few more and getting rid of all the rock in my sump and see how that goes for me as the rock is a HUGE detritus trap.

They aren't the same thing at all. One is ceramic and one is sintered glass. One is a third the price.

Who said they were the same? I said they do the same job. Also neither is sintered glass. Matrix is quite literally pumice. Siporax and SubstratPro are sintered glass but neither were asked about.

I was referring to the statement by a EDJFA. You are correct. I was thinking if siporax. I also have that but isn't in use yet. Only 24 liters if Matrix. I love our local forum and didn't mean to offend anyone.

I use the biospheres in my sump. Never really had a problem with them building up anything and seem to really add to the bio-filtration. I would use them again in a heartbeat.

I have used the balls and the thinner plates from M-pure in the past when I didn't have space for a lot of rock in my sump. For the price they worked well and I found that they really helped to free up sump space.
