I guess i am kind of a new guy to the reef aquarium. I have had a 125 for about 6 years now. I also have an 8 gal nano, that tank is more fun two false and a carpet anemone. (it's was i door prize my wife won at my lfs).

i am currently working on a built in 300g reef with a 125g refuge. i will be taking down the one 125 once this tank is established.

the real question is to rinse or not rinse the seaflor sand before using it in the new refuge. if to rinse is the answer, how is this done.

thanks

While it is not my money to spend, if the existing sand bed is 6 years old, I wouldn't try to reuse it. Just way to much accumulated debri and junk over the years that I would be afraid you could never wash out. I would use six cups or so of the surface sand to seed your new aquarium sand (put it in little piles in several locations throughout the new tank rather than mix it in with the new sand).

If everything is fine why not move the established bed. I'd place it in a fine strainer and rinse it with salt water. To save bucks do it just before the transfer and use water from the old tank. Just remember it will take a couple of weeks to reestablish itself after the transfer.

i wasn't clear the sand in the 125 is about a year old, the tank was moved to a new house. i will use it in the 300 main tank. The seaflor is new and will be used in the refuge and just seed with the old sand.
