Well, i was taking pictures of my horses on friday as the male was pretty fat. I wanted to show a bubby what they would look like if they were el prego. Then saturday morning i went do to do the norm, check on the tanks. WOW, there were aroudn 50 little horses swimming at the top of the water. I quickly setup a q-tank, transfered some water and started the bbs. I didn't have any baby Brime shimp hatached so i would have to wait to feed them. I moved over all the horses to the tank. Check out the little buggers. My BBS hatched over night so i was able to feed them today. Good sign was they were hitting the bbs. I also put in some cyclepeeze just to see if anyone would take that.

anyway here are some pics!!! Enjoy!

First few pics are Friday of male.

Looks good Bob. You don't need the heater though this time of year. The fry can handle temps down to about 68 or 69 degrees.

Dan

Thanks Dan,

I didn't realize they could handle that low of a temp. Is lower temps better because of less chance of disease? Right now it sits about 75 degree.

Some do subscribe to that theory. I am always more concerned about a heating overheating if the thermostat goes or the seahorses getting burned by it. I put heaters in sumps but here you obviously can't. I generally don't worry about heating unless the water temp will dip below 69. Even at those temps, we still see breeding. Depending on where your erectus are from, they could be used to even cooler temps.

Dan

Maybe i will lower the temp the heater and let it slowly decline. Then remove the heater and see where the temp sits at. The tank is in my basement near the A/C so i will have to keep an eye on it.

thanks for the replies.

well, i went away for 4 days, but had someone feed them while gone. I did lose quite a bit but still have 20 strong.

no need for a filter. just drop in an air stone and change the water every other day. Some people will do a water change everyday. I tend to do 1 every 3 days. You need to suck up all the crap sitting on the bottom so make sure it is bb.

If you do want to do a filter you can just add a sponge filter.

I will have to take some later on. I did lose quite a bit already. I am down to about 15 of them. I can tell which ones are strong and which are weak. The weak horses are clearer as the stong ones have a nice dark black/brown color.

Hey guys--nice job on the babies!

A couple of things I've learned from my brief time raising them:

try weaning them from the BBS to Cyclopeeze as soon as they are big enough to eat it--MUCH easier :)

You're going to lose a large portion of the "litter"--try not to get too upset at each one. This is what would be happening in the wild too. If you look at the bunch, you will probably see some that are skinnier, aren't good eaters, just aren't thriving. They probably aren't as genetically robust as the others, and are going to perish no matter what you do.

Pics please! :)

Christine

Yes, the BBS sucks. Such a pain but works. I am at 9 right now, just moved 30 mins away and they all seems to make the trip ok.

I agree on cyclopeeze, i will try to add that soon.
