How long after they mated?

If your seahorse thinks its time to release the fry, and they are just eggs then he could possibly not have fertilised them - younger males are known to mess up the first few broods.

If he is older, and/or the time is too short, it can be than he figures that something is wrong with the brood, and he is cleaning out his pouch. Seahorses will do this if stressed in the first few days of pregnancy, later on in the pregnancy they seem to hold on even if stressed.

There should be no ill effects.

Watch him for the next few days for boyancy problems.

ok first of all thank you to all who have replied.

the seahorse was pregnant for about 2 and a half weeks and everything seemed to be going fine then he went in to labour and started giving birth to eggs and mucas and ever since he looks like hes still having contractions,he hasnt moved from the same place he gave birth (hanging on a bit of coral) and he hasnt eaten for about 3 days and even just now it looked like weird mucas stuff is still coming out of him,he is acting differently to normal and im wondering if this is ok?

please let me know if this is all ok if anyone out there knows

thanks amanda

my seahorse has been in labour since the 9th of aug and hes still in labour right now, hes having convulsions and littlte see through eggs with red dots in the middle are coming out,he also hasnt eaten for the 4 days he has been in labour and he hasnt moved from the piece of coral hes hanging from?

is there anything i can do to help and is he going to die if he doesnt eat soon?

any info would be great

many thanks amanda

You need to get your male to eat and soon. I would try feeding some live foods even live brine just to see if he will take it. Check his eye movement and if he has a fixed stare you need to take action pronto.

You might try to remove him from his hitch and see if he floats to the surface. If he can swim normally then he has probably gotten any foul left overs out of his pouch.

I would suggest you post all vital info in the emergency sections of either www.syngnathid.org or www.seahorse.org

Good luck

he did have a little swim from one rock to another last night and doesnt seem to be floating up,hes eyes are not stairng he looks all around just like the girl but again this morning hes just hanging on to the coral and im still not sure if hes pouch is completley empty but surely it should be after 4 days of labour?

It is never sure that your seahorse has expelled its eggs.

They will be decaying and may be causing an infection. At 2.5 weeks you should see clearly formed seahorses, not eggs. These eggs were not viable or were not fertilised.

The pouch needs flushing.
I would use some form of topical antibiotic mix in the flush.
I can cut n paste from one of the other websites listed, or you can check the procedure there yourself.
