Hey Gang,,,

Well Ever since John Started getting Tank Raised seahorses.. Thats all I've heard out of Shannon...Can I have a seahorse.. Well lets get rid of your manits then.. Can one go in the Fuge,, Can we get a new tank. Lol well you get the idea..

So I got us a 35 Hexagon tank.:eek1: It came in wednesday if I remember right. I'm an idiot when it comes to seahorses so any advice is welcomed.. I already know they like lower temps and lower water flows. I plan on keeping this tank seperate from my Reefs just cause I keep those tanks at 78 in winter and 80 in the summer..

I'm going to install an external overflow on the tank ;). Lighting will be a 150 Watt Mh. I bought a stand and tank.. But I wasn't all that impressed with the AGA stand so I built a new one out of solid oak and oak Ply.. The factory one was made out of particle board and the oak sticker didnt' match the color of my 180... I plan on building a Hexagon sump lol yeah a Hexagon.. Should be fun  No really I just want to try it.. If it doesn't work out I'll just build a Square one I guess:( haha

Since its not going to be connected to my reefs I had to get a skimmer for it.. I ended up getting one of those New ASM mini's.. I've heard good things about them.. Besides.. it is an ASM ;)

Well anyhow I'll shut up and show you guys some PICTUREs!!

This is the Door. I used a couple of PC harddrive magnets for door catches lol.. Don't ask me why. Just what was laying on my bench haha. Looks pretty good though.

Fits Pretty Dern Good If I dont say so my self Knotice The tank sits down into the trim so you dont see the tanks trim..

After paint and Stain.. I also installed Plastic sheeting in the bottem like my other tanks..The stand still needs Poly besides that its done.

You guys think this setup will be good for Seahorses?
Well thats all Folks...

nicely done. Really love the hard drive magnets. Being an IT geek, i know those things have great uses once their origional purpose isnt valid anymore.

That is just too cool:D I have toyed with the idea of a seahorse tank. Stiil trying to get the "system" stocked. What type of seahorses are you getting? I think some pipefish would also look good with the seahorses.;)

Thanks,, Guys

Haha well I was going to use one of those magnet deels for cabinet doors.. But it was plastic and stuck out into the door opening.. Just thought it would look cheap.. This way you dont even really see whats holding it..

Picture the Reef, I'm not 100% sure yet..I've been looking around.. Like I said I'm very new at this.. I ordered a book on them the other day. It should be here next day or so.. But I am for sure going to have a couple of pipefish too.. Maybe banded ones.. Or a couple of Aligator pipes.. I'm guessing it matters a lil on what Seahorses I get.

I've seen this linked before, so If I get in trouble it's all your fault  www.seahorse.org

Awesome stand construction!! Great work, and I LOVE the stain :D I've asked Kris for a seahorse tank too, especially since he got his 75g, but to be honest, Im not up for ANOTHER tank right now

Brianna:rollface:

That is gonna be SWEEEEEEEET!
Seems like that would be an ideal tank for horses. I've read that they like a tank with height, and obviously they don't need much room to swim horizontally. It'll be great for veiwing them.
Johnny's horses looked big and healthy, and he said that they were eating mysis. But I figured that tank raised horses might show a little more color -- maybe it was just the mood they were in.

If I remember correctly, it's a bad idea to mix captive bred horses with wild caught pipes (there aren't many sources of CB pipes). It seems that the horses have no immunities and tend to catch anything the pipes have, only it does more damage. Just something to think about.

By the way, I found that here:

Pipefish and Seahorses

I don't think it's conclusive, but better safe than sorry untill you get a little experience taking care of the seahorses and know what behavior to expect from a healthy seahorse.

Thanks for all the comments and info..

Mariner,, They change color due to thier mood.. I think Johns are simply Unhappy from shipping.. They also tend to like taller tanks.. The 15s they are in might not be helping.. From what I've read its really common for H.Kudas to Turn black.. Not sure what kind Johns are..

You are right you for sure wouldn't want to add anything wild caught to as seahorse tank!! But if you keep them in a Quartine tank for 4 weeks or so and treat them for parasites should be ok.. Heck from what I've read most people on Seahorse forums recommend you get your captive bred horses from the same breeder and dont mix horses from two breeders in one tank!

Will,

Go into the Reefcentral chatroom sometime and look for SeaNemesis. I haven't seen her around as much here lately, but she wrote one of the leading books on seahorses, and is probably the best person to talk to.

If there is anyone else toying with the notion of a seahorse tank, I have a 65g All-Glass hex that I would be willing to part with.
It is a monster, but would make a very pretty display.

Thanks guys for all the Feedback,

The Stand is done.. I've also got the tank drilled and the back wall installed.. I did have the overflow installed to But:rolleyes1: lol I kinda of goofed like an idiot I stood the tank upright to move it and didn't really think about the fact I just siliconed the overflow on 2hrs before...Left it setting for a sec and went to clear a spot for it.."BANG" looked back the overflow was setting on the floor with the bottem cracked..Sigh.. Plan on drilling a new bottem and installing it tonight some time.. After that one broke last night I figured I didnt' need to handle anymore glass for the night haha. I'll take some new pictures tonight and try to get them posted..

PM sent................. Lol not really I just felt left out:p

I got the new bottem in the oveflow tonight :rolleye1: So I guess the tank and stand are done now.. I just have to get the sump finished.... I'm still waiting on the skimmer to come in before I get started on it.. I just want to make sure the footprint of the skimmer is what they say it is before I start on the sump. It should be here Friday! Here is a few shots of what things look like now..
