ya know, my boyfriend REALLY wants a starfish: its from my reef tank, when I had a serpent star: he thought it was SOO COOL 
I'm jumping on, cause I also want a starfish, but don't really know my options, and am afraid of linkia, since they tend to die so easily from what I hear...

oh, and the reson I'm not looking at britles/serpents: I had one, and it moved just TOO fast for me to be comfortable with horses..
Hmm. Starfish are just not the best things to keep with seahorses. Linkias require at least a 100g tank. I am sure someone will pipe up and contradict me, but the vast majority of people just can't keep them in smaller tanks.
Fromia are even worse.
Brittle stars are scavengers. I do not believe that they are predatory at all. There is one serpant star, a green one, that gets very large and can trap fish.
There are not really a whole lot of choices here unfortunately. The orange serpant stars are not predatory and are a very striking starfish. Still the best choice imho.
If you feed the starfish first, it should not compete with your seahorses for their dinner.

serpents wouldn't beable to compete for food-my feeding dish is ON the glass, about 6 inches away from the top of the tank...
and I KNEW linkias are hard: I'm one of the people that say 'bigger is better' so I'll go with you saying 100 gallons.
my brittle just scared me: he didn't go after any fish, but he was SO FAST, if he tried to munch a horse, I wouldn't beable to stop him if I saw it...

I know you are nervous about the brittle stars, but they really are not predatory. They will go after any dead flesh you put into your tank. You would be surprised how they can use their arms for leverage to push themselves up towards food.
For my $ I would still go with the orange serpants. There is also a beige/white sand sifting start that is commonly available. Of course it will hoover all the micro critters out of your sand bed...

well, they have them ON the site, but they are out of stock... under the starfish page. last one, I think, or near it. they think they may be fromia or... well, heres the description, and they are called red, but look orange to me!!!
Another Great find. These Stars were hand picked from a local wholesaler. These are of the Fromia or Neoferdina sp. and considered reef safe. They should be kept in tanks with live rock from which they can graze algae and microorganisms. We have only the three pictured available at this time.
