Seahorse tank finally up!

Well today I finally set up my seahorse tank! Yeah!!

Used about 50-50 fresh salt water and water from established tank. Put in a new sand bed, but will mix in some from existing tank, just was waiting till up to temp and making sure salinity is right (so any benificial things in the sand don't die). Next I just need to get some live rock and hitches.

One step closer to having the horses I want! I have only been researching and planning this for two years!

Yeah the only big news on it is I had to haul everything in and set it up except for the very last part of water. I think I'll claim the tank as my own as payment

Oh no he won't!!! This tank is mine, all mine LOL! Hauling the heavy stuff is why I married him, not going to pay him for it LOL!

Robin,

I am so excited for you! I know all your research will pay off in spades.

Any room for a brain?

sara

Missed you at the last 2 meetings! I got to go instead of Brian, looking forward to seeing you.

Brian is wondering if you are giving me his brain?? I think he may need it more than me LOL!

Tank is now mostly settled, but it is an empty tank with one piece of live rock in the middle of the shallow sandbed...the sand does have tracks from something moving around in it as I did put several cups of sand from the established reef tank. It need more stuff in it, it seems so empty!

I placed another order for some plants. Getting some manatee grass this time. The turtle grass is doing well, but this stuff is supposed to grow faster. Also picked up a gorgonian and a couple other critters.
Will post after the order arrives on my impression of the company. Were not expensive and read good things about them on the macro algae forum.

Any idea when you are targetting to get the horses? Maybe we can split shipping if you still want to order from Draco.

Down Linda Down!! lol
Michael, shouldn't be long on the cycle she'll be testing today on progress. Other than that she needs some hitches.

I am not sure how long I should cycle the tank considering I used water and sand from my reef tank....what do you think?? Right now my parimeters are good. Do you think I will get the ammonia spike?? or could I get the horses soon??

I already contacted Jorge because I had heard that there was a waiting list and didn't want to be ready for the horses and him not have any. He says he has a beautiful batch of erectus (some with cirri too) right now that are not sexually mature, but able to be sexed. He said we (I mentioned Linda) could order at any time.

I just need to get some more live rock and then some hitches

I'm good in 2 weekends- week of June 17th. That should give you time to watch the tank parameters. What do you have for filtration? Cycle could go real fast- add some of the green water I gave you guys. It helps kickstart the bugs. My tank has been going for about 10 weeks I think. I did pretty much what you did, but it did still go through the normal algae cycle of cyano, etc. Water is real clear now. The turtle grass and mangroves are growing well. I might rig it for a built in refugium this weekend (hard to explain- basically going to put an acrylic box on the outside of the tank- but permanently attached. Just need to drill a couple holes, glue with weldon, then add a little sealant. I put a small pump in the tank to feed it, and it will drain back into the tank.

Tank is going to be plumbed to the main system- another weekend project. Been running filterless, with just circulation. Pod popultaion is going well. Been feeding greenwater and small amounts of food to the tank. Definately need some cleaners in there!

She left for work but I'll add a little for her. Right now it has a power filter on it. I don't know were the parameters she wrote down are but I know her PH was about 8 and ammonia I read as.25 but she thinks it might be lower.

Hi Michael,

If your tank has been running for 10 weeks I hate to say mine is close to ready. I did check my paramiters yesterday and the ph was close to 8, ammonia was slight, my nitrites were 0 and my nitrates (think I got them straight LOL) was around 10 - a little high but still in the acceptable range. I have to bring the salinity down a little though. I do have an ammonia alert thing in my tank and it is saying safe. Brian did add the green water todayas you suggested.

I still really need some live rock (but Linda has bought out everyone and left nothing for me LOL) and hitches before I get the horses though. Where did you get your grasses etc???? I also need some clean up crew, I do have a few snail in there that were in the sand that I brought over from the other tank.

I noticed on Draco's site that if you, Linda and I each order at least 2 horses each that the shipping will be free and there is only an $8 box fee, makes it a lot cheaper for us!!

I just don't want to add the horses too soon!

Thanks.....Let me know when would be a good time to get some....tank looks too empty right now, needs something LOL!

If you have some light for it, Mangroves would be good. I placed my most recent order with florida pets. for many of the grasses like turtle grass, and maybe manatee, you want some strong lighting from the tanks I have seen. My first order in which I got my mangroves and turtle grass was from an e-bay place. If you search for mangroves, you should find them. It was pretty cheap, but the shipping wasn't the cheapest. These smaller operations can't ship as cheap as the big places that give free shipping.

I purposely let mine go this long. I never bothered watching the cycle as I new it would have plenty of time and no raw rock in it. Though given the time, I wish I would have started with some fresh rock.

The time was the result of not finding the time to plumb it into the other tank, but mostly because I wanted plenty of time for the pods to establish themselves. Need to make a descision on the refugium this weekend. The tank has several big piles of rubble which I don't want in the main display, but it helped get the pods there. My main tanks overflow and sump is loaded with mysis shrimp, which I'm sure will make their way over to the new tank.

I'm also waiting for my daughter to get here for the summer, which will be next weekend. That is the biggest reason.

Florida pets....very nice people from my experience. never ordered from them, but know they come highly recommened on seahorse.org (also a discount). I have corresponded with one of the owners on several occasions and always very prompt answering back! This is where I was thinking on looking at for some things.

The horses will love it if the mysis come to visit LOL. I was planning on using frozen, at least for now.

If your daughter is anything like my kids, she will love the horses....my kids are so excited!!

My daughter has had her ""own" tank for the last 4 years or more.. At 7 I taught her to do tests on water.... She learned even more from all the time she has spent in the labs with me. Especially from my former students.

She was a key evaluator of the water from Nutri-sea that was used at MACNA----but don't tell anyone :)
did all the tests and then some- namely evaluation of the animals over the course of 3 weeks.
