Seahorse Tank Mates

Hey guys!

I have a 55 gal seahorse tank that I has been in the works for a few months now. I started with two sea horses in a 12 gal nano. I couldnt stand to see them in there any more so I upgraded them to the 55 gal. I now have 10 horses and two clown gobies. I have about 150 lbs of live rock and a few corals. I just bumped my lighting to a 216w t-5 system (and hope to add 108 more).

Anybody have experience keeping seahorses with corals? I am curious which corals will do well with them and which ones will hurt them or retract due to hitching.

I hope to keep some nice acans and chalices in there, I also hope to have some scolys one day. Any opinions on any of these?

Also, I know alot of you will be opposed to this, but does anyone have an opinion on putting a golden dwarf eel in the tank with the horses? I keep one right now and he doesnt bother any of the fish (even my cromis). Any opinion will help.

If you guys want to start a list of tank mates, this would be a great place!

Any opinions on different pipe fish is encouraged.

as for the eel, i wouldn't chance it. eels are nocturnal, and one of their feeding habits is to prowl at night in search of sleeping fish to eat. a sleeping SH fits that bill to a tee...late supper is served. i've kept eels that were docile, model citizens, and once they reached maturity became real terrors.

as for corals, anything without sweeper tentacles is generally OK. steer clear of Euphyllia, Plerogyra, Catalaphyllia, Heliofungia, and Physogyra, to name a few.

SH will usually try to hitch to about anything, and once they decide they like a hitch, will use it repeatedly. besides water quality flow, and temp issues (remember, tropicals should be kept below 74*F), Sh have been known to stress corals.

in the end, it's all about what kind of risks you're willing to take with your stock (both fish and coral).

defnitly no ell but stick tto all hard stoney coral as soft coral to many thing will most likely go wrong like the seahorses getting stung getting stuck on a sticky coral thing like that good luck

I have had my 2 pair of ORA Reidi's in a 30g hex for about 8 months. They are alone, along with a super cleanup crew. I do have a mandarin goby and red serpent star. They corals that are housed with them are zoas, blastos, acans, (coco worms...great hitching posts!!), pulsing pink xenia, red shrooms, ricordea. The horses do not bother the corals as they are stationary during the day and are only active in the morning during feeding time. :-)
