Seahorse Tank

I'd like to start a SH tank and I'm doing all my research. I'd like to get some ideas for my tank. I want to start a 55 gallon tank with a 20 gallon sump.

Can I see pics of your SH tanks?

What kind of species of seahorses are you planning to keep?
Do you want to have corals?
Just remember that seahorses like it better at 72-74 degrees so you will need a fan or chiller in AZ.

one of our SH tanx (before the macro was grown-in)...a 50 gal pent:

the tank has a sump, skimmer, closed-loop, and a 1/10 hp chiller.

is that real coral?

it's Tonga branch LR, so yes, it's real, but it's not a live coral.

I was told to steer clear of dwarf seahorse since they require live food.

yes, zots (H. zosterae) require live food their entire lives. it's also difficult to do a "natural" setup for them due to having hydroid blooms (because of the presence of small live food items). many folks start with all dead items and let it go "live". also, if you think larger species of SH don't swim much, multiply that by about 100 for zots. they ARE very cute tho.

namxas and TikiDan:
where did/do you guys buy your plants and/or algae? Found a few sites, but would like some personal preferences.
The 15 gallon tank I set up for bangaii rearing has been hijacked by my girlfriend when she came home with 3 H. comes to 'put something in the tank with nothing in it'. After explaining how she ruined my frag tank/nursery plans, she has agreed to throw money in for a 50-70 gallon tank for her beloved seahorses, which I have also taken a shining to in the past couple weeks. The tanks above are what I am dreaming of, and would like some plant recommendations/warnings prior to setting up a SH tank.
Anything grow out of control? constantly going sexual? dieing? flow? Anything will help, my google searching is yielding limited knowledge.....maybe wrong keywords? maybe a live plant seahorse tank not very popular?
Thanks for whatever you got as far as advice.

I got all of my seagrass from gulf coast ecosystems. They are a great company to deal with.

Where in Humboldt are you? I grew up in McKinleyville :)

we got some of our macro from John Maloney at Reefcleaners.com he has great stuff, but we already had a good protion of it and just used trimmings from other tanx we have.

as for going sexual, the C. racemosa (green grape) gets iffy every so often, but we just yank out the bad pieces and it grows back.

thanks for the quick responses folks, will check out those companies.
TikiDan, I grew up in McKinleyville too, now living in Arcata the last year or so. First sunny day in a week today! There is actually a pet store in McKinleyville now with lots of saltwater things (and lizards, snakes, frogs, etc.) called Blue Planet. Ron Miller is the owner, not sure if you know him.

class of 98.
finally noticed the 'click on the house' part of your profile. Nice build. do you feel 250W is necessary for proper growth of most plants? We run 150s on the 120 tank and the algae grows fine if you let it ;) Thinking our budget for the SH tank was going to be $1500......250W could change that, though not by too much I guess. Fear the sheriff will be kicking down the door with too much more power consumption.....2 saltwater tanks, big bearded dragon setup, little freshwater tank. hmmmm.

you don't really need MH at all for SH and most macros. it's really more if you plan to keep true seagrasses.

The MH worked great but you will need a chiller for sure to keep the water below 74 degrees for the ponies :)

BTW whats your name? my bro graduated in class of '98, I was in 2000 :)
