Sealant suddenly turned yellow on new tank?

Just built a small tank for my office, cycling it at home. Took water & sand from existing tank and put in it for 2 weeks. Then transfered a piece of LR, within days, sealant turned yellow, thought it as just alge, but it won't wipe off. Been that way for about 10 days. Anybody seen this happen before? Will the yellow leach back out of the sealant?

Happened to the silicon i used to glue baffles in my sump. Been that way for a year now, i don't think it will clear up. But its my sump so i don't care, if it was the display it would be a different story

Yes, sealant's got a little fishy on it :) Its genuine acquarium sealant, Got it from Glasscages.com. I'm sure it's ok. Funny thing is sealant is still clear under the sand and above the water line.

Yah mine was 100% silicon, same stuff that keeps the tank together. I don't know why it yellowed out either. Very odd.

Wow, I feel better now! I thought I was the only one that happened to. :D It wipes off, but comes right back after a day or two. I used GE 1 Silicone.

I had the same thing happen to me in my sump. Not sure why but I used GE Window and Door I which was suggested highly on this board. I happen to think its due to not allowing the silicone to cure for more than 24 hours (which I didn't).

Is the silicone on your display Clear? I've heard that some additives can cause silicone to change color.. Thats why Oceanic and AGA have there Black Seal tanks. Heck for that matter I think thats all Oceanic uses now.. AGA you have to pay Extra.. My 180 was custom made in canada They also offered Black Silicone.. All of my tanks have black silicone on them. I hate the way clear looks when it changes like that.. Or even when its just dirty.

The silicon in the display and the original silicon in my sump is still clear. bigdee65 might be on to something, i don't recall how long i let the silicon cure before i water tested.

That happened in my sump too, and I used GE Silicone II.

I let mine cure for at least a day.

No additives except ca/alk and mag.

I let mine dry for about 22 hours before I installed it. I have the problem on my FOWLR and I don't have any additives besides what in the IO salt. Not sure what the heck would be causing this but like I said it might be cure time

I always give a whole week for it to cure. Have done a couple test and its all to not letting the sealent cure.

When your adding silicone to baffles you are not adding a thin layer, your adding around 1.5 to 2 inches on both sides of silicone and that will need way more that 1 day.

HTH.

The tube says 48 hrs MIN.. I always give mine atleast 72hours.. But your right that could be the problem.. If its not cured it might have absorbed something out of the water into it.. You guys are playing with fire that stuff if very Toxic to the tank untill it cures 100%

Why doesn't everyone use a silicone meant for aquariums like all-glass sealant? Since the GE brand is not intended for aquariums they may tweek the process sometime as all manufacturers do from time to time and possibly add something you do not want. 100% silicone does not mean their is nothing else in there, doesn't the silicone with mildew resistant additive say 100% as well? At least if the product is specifically for aqauriums they know if they change something they should investigate the impact on fish and corals. I doubt GE would since they do not intend the product to be used like some are apparently using it. A 10 oz tube of all-glass sealant is $7.99 so the cost difference is not huge.

If its 100% silicon, how can there be other things in it? Then it would add up to say 107%? That makes no sense. If there are mildew resistant chemicals in it, the tube does not say 100% silicon, rather Pure Silicon mildew resistant for example. The stuff "for aquariums" is the same stuff in a different container and 2 to 3 times the price. Check the ingredients.

I would check the labels again, Impur. No offense but even the white silicone II with mildew resistence added (and obviously white coloring as well) says 100% silicone. I guess they could be saying they start with 100% silicone initially or the additives are so small in comparison but that is what they say.

Hmm, i have 8 tubes at home, 3 are mildew resistant and do not say 100% silicone. The other 5 are 100% silicone and do not claim to be mildew resistant. The mildew resistant ones have additional ingrediants. Just going by my experience, i guess its different in your part of the country. Or we are talking different brands or something.
