Sean Bennett vs. Cali tort....Is there a diference?

I have a larger colony of the CA tort and a three inch frag of what someone called the Sean Bennett tort. For the first four months I couldn't tell the difference. Here lately the S.B. tort looks much brighter and has more of a greenish base. See for yourself.

looking good. thanks for clarifying

Thanks, but I'm not sure if I clarified anything. I'm hoping someone can tell me the difference. Right now all I know is one looks brighter than the other.:D

I saw the original SB Tort colony today again, I think the green base disappears as it grows larger. The thing is solid blue, just like Sand Dollar's picture and most pix of larger Cali tort colonies. It is one of the most impressive corals I have ever seen, although Eric has about a half dozen of the most impressive corals I've ever seen. ;-)

znut,

The Becker tort is from a completely different colony and the one's that i have seen don't seem to get as robust as the Cali tort does. Still an equally beautiful tort imo.

My Cali tort colony really didn't get the deep blue until i switched over to running 14Ks and 20Ks.

S. Dollar,

So if I were to glue the smaller frag to my larger colony I should be O.K. when they melt together?

Sand Dollar,

Thanks for the information. I didn't want to get a frag of it if it was the same as theCali or Ora tort.

Glad to hear it's different, never seen one in person, just a pic on Atlantis's site. So will put it on the list to get.

Fishy all is doing well, just made the switch out last Wed. Still have some aquascaping to do yet. But all went well.

Thanks, going on about 4 yrs.

As far as i know the Cali, Bennett and ORA tort all originated from the same colony.

What Rich (Sand Dollar) says is right on. Chris Schweb (he is back in the hobby and his RC name is schweb) was the one who owned the original Cali Tort and came from Bob Mankin of coral farms. The cali tort originated as a Soloman Island disk (that's what they were called then).

Chris told me himself that he distributed the tort to ORA and as for Bennett's tort - well all i will say is that Chris and Sean are really good friends :D

FWIW the cali tort can either be a solid purple or purple with what I call radium greens that develop when it is lit by 20K type of lighting. Here's what a Cali Tort can develop into under Radiums:

So what your saying John, is they're all Bob pieces then :D

Rich, you sure know how to brighten a guys day with EYE candy!

Yeah I guess it's his lasting legacy other than the K2R reactor. I sure wonder where he is now.

Thanks John for the confirmation...I thought it came in through Schweb via Bob M., but i didn't want to state anything since i wasn't for sure.

Thanks Gresham...what lfs you hangin out in these days? I haven't seen any for a while.

I guess you were in my neck of the woods today:D Don't those San Gabriel Mts look great with all the snow.

Eric's had that coral for a while now. I saw it about 10 days ago and its a lot different looking then it was a month ago, must be that secret sauce he started using;)
