seashells

ok, so I am at the beach for a few days here and my kids are gathering seashells and wanting me to take them home and put them in my tank....is this OK? I am always leary of putting things in there so this may be a dumb question...I would probably boil them for a few to kill anything off of them....

I was always told not to. I don't really understand why though because it seems like you should be able to use natural things, I dunno, someone will chime in here.

I have always put my legally collected seashells in my tanks so the crabs have something to grow into. I just wash them off and toss them in and in a day or so I see it walking around the rocks. I always look for ones that I think the crabs will like. Think small hermet crab shells and you will find all kinds. Little fighter conch shells are good as well as the cerith type snail shells. Don't ever put shells that you buy from a gift shop in the tank as alot of them are lacquared, shellaced or even dyed. I think that would be the worry. But cleaned shells from the beach are sweet. IMO.

I used some in my sump. No biggie. They just aren't as porous as other things, ie rock, so don't rely on them to become "live" and help with filtration. My do have some coraline and even sponges, tube worms, etc growing on them. They look pretty cool. One of my coral islands uses them as a base, and the royal gama loves them because they make cool hiding places for him.

I've had no problems, and I've had them for going on four years now.

Just clean them up and make sure they aren't still inhabited.

I started my first saltwater tank with sand I collected from inside the high tide line at the beach in NC, I never had a problem with it and I kept that sand for almost 4 years before I changed it out.
