Sebae Anemone won't attach it's self

Hello Everyone,

I got a Sebae Anemone yesterday and it will not attach it's self. I have it on the sand against some live rock. It seems to be holding on with its tentacles not from the bottom of the Anem. The tank has been set up for 8 months or so and my water test fine.
 
It doesn't usually happen right away.
Just put it where it gets enough flow to gently move tentacles.
leave it alone and it should either attach, or move to where it wants.
Could take 2 or 3 days.
Just watch that it doesn't get pushed into an intake.
I put rock in front of intakes so it can't even get close.
Try to leave it alone.
 
Sebae anemones (both H. malu and H. crispa) don't really attach to hard substrate with their pedal disk similar to how other anemones do. These are sand dwelling anemones, so they usually bury their foot in sand, or wedge themselves into a deep enough crack or crevasse into the rock, and then hold themselves open by using their verrucae (the little bumps on the sides) to hold onto the surrounding substrate.
 
I have mine now for 4 weeks and it's been moving every 3-4 days .Not eating (probably living on fish poop from the two A.Ocelaris hosting it.
I've tried shrimp,fish,scallops a mush of the above feeing it via a turkey baster with no avail...
Right now is't in the shade attached to a rock still in a shrinked posture since the beginning. My guess is that mine will probably die if it stays in the shade too long.Anyway there's not much one can do,if you move it you'll stress it to the point of killing it.

Okay forget all of the below...lol YOu have been around long enough...Hate to see these poor guys perish:(
You need to get that guy eating. Try small pieces of silversides as that is what most nems eat. And with him moving around something is making him upset. I would say next time he attaches dig a hole in the sand place his foot in it and cover it back up. It is not a happy camper though. What are your water params and how long has the tank been set up? Hopefully with everyone here we can figure out the problem and save this guy.

My tank is 3 months old , I must confess. I know it's not mature enough but there isn't any swings at any given parameter so that's why I bought it,I knew they were not easy.As far as digging holes in the substrate to help it,my clowns are the ones digging every place it attaches too, quite remarkable to see these little guys trying their hardest.But it doesn't seems to be happy.As far as silver sides we don't have any over here therefore I tried giving it fish because that's what they mostly eat in the wild...with no luck.Anyway I still try to feed it , maybe it will start responding. I've read alot of threads about H.crispa ,some indicated it could take two months before it attaches permanently.

Therefore its bleached. There is noo such thing as a healthy white Sebae.
 
55 semireef is right. You need to get feeding that guy. YOu are in Ontario right?. There has go to be someone who sells silversides. I know both my lta's will not eat anything but that. I have tried others but not a chance. You can order from J&L as we'll i know they have them. If i was a little closer i would ship them to you:)
But yes if it is bleached it needs light and food to surivive.

Bleached nems are a bummer, but not a death sentance.
Both my nems were bleached out petco refugees(before I knew better)
5 years now and they couldn't be healthier(pics in gallery)
Light is a big food source, so don't stress too much about it eating yet.
They will eat raw shrimp if you don't have silvers.
let it acclimate.
 
I have done this many times but I will do it again. Here is a picture of my Heteractis Crispa when I bought it and now. I bought it bleached hoping I could bring it back to healthy state. There is a difference between buying it bleached knowing it is and buying it bleached without having any idea. Fortunately, my Crispa attached within a couple of hours.

Thats an example of a H. Crispa regaining all of its Zooxanthellae algae.
 
I have a crispa as well, in the begining when it was bleached we used mysis shrimp. It was small enough that it didn't overwhelm the nem. After a week or so, we began trying other foods and found that not only does ours like silversides, but it will eat shrimp, clams, scallops, mussels and the like from the seafood counter. Maybe there's something in that list that you haven't tried yet. The first time it took a piece of scallop we were very excited to see it actually eating. It's hard to keep track of the small white mysis against the white nem!

Isn' it weird that every time I put a piece of food in the Sebae, the clowns will take it off.You can see some pics of the Sebae taken two weeks ago in my gallery.
I'll try a piece of clam tomorrow , hopefully it will eat.
 
You can also target feed with something like Kent microvert. Its just crushed up inverts suspended in other stuff. Anemones will absorb it and it will keep them alive until they start taking food. I now feed all my nems fresh shrimp. (they're spoiled by the way).

I would also ask the LFS what they fed. Biggest problem I see is the age of you tank. I've never seen one survive in a tank less than 6 months old. They need at least that much (minimim) to stabilize enough to suppost the whims of a nem. Good luck and I hope it survives. Sebaes are one of the most difficult to keep, BTW. You might consider trading him back to the LFS for a future LTA or RBTA. Give your tank time to season before intoducing another nem.

They are simply too beautiful to risk loosing, IMO.
 
My clowns will throw food out of the nem too. I've never seen them feed their anemone, if they do, it's completely by accident. They'll snatch a peice of food and take it back to eat it, but they don't actually give the nem food. I'm happy they're hosting, I can take care of the feeding :)
