Sebastian and Florida Coast Marine Life

OK, i know that I and alot of other people take trips to the coast to collect (legally), and i m7self have caught some weird things that iDK what they are. I have done some research on them and found nothing. I am looking for people who found something, and know what it is, and know where a pic is of it, so that others can learn. I have several kinds of crabs, some resembling emerald crabs, some more like fiddlers, but then have hairs like gorilla crabs, then just fiddlers. I have fo9und anemones that are not flower anemones, but are pruple-ish with a red foot and it is beaded(beaded anemone...???)...i have found flower ROck anemones and knwo that they are flower rock anemones...lol, but well, you get what i mean, post pics of things you ahve caught, or found, or have, and witht he name and all, or post sites that have the species of these things. It wil help us leanr what they are, and then maybe, if somsone finds something they cant take, they will know it.

No, not all of them, i get to kep my 75 and my 5.5.....im lucky, and im grounded from everything until the end of april...

Just out of curiosity what kind of a setup do you keep your fiddlers in since they are semi-terrestrial?

When I lived back on the island it was the most curious thing to see at low tide-ALL of the fiddlers would come out of their holes to eat and pick at stuff left in the sand from the tide going out and you'd literally see THOUSANDS in a huge colony all along the shoreline. If you got near them though, PEW down into their holes they'd shoot.

My dog used to like to chase them until she found out what the big claw was for

Sea anemones - Any species of the Orders Actinaria, Zoanthidea, Corallimorpharia, and Ceriantharia.


Order Actiniaria: Include solitary species, with large polyps, sedentary: the basal disc, sucker shaped, allows adhaesion to the bottom but small movements are possible. Many species with zooxanthellae.

Order Zoanthidea: includes small colonial anemones: the zooids are connected among them, in large colonies. Many species bear zooxanthellae. Some produce and accumulate powerful toxins in their internal organs.

Order Corallimorpharia: includes flad bodied anemones, with a large oral disc and a short column body, short tentacles. Some solitary species, most are colonial but the zooids originated by asexual reproduction lose connection. Many species are zooxanthellae bearers. Being very similar (but without skeleton) some species are considered an intermediate between anemones and hard corals.

Order Ceriantharia: includes solitary anemones living in a self produced membranous tube, normally in the sediment.

So we have anemones, zoo's, mushrooms, and tube anemones.

As for crabs only the following have any restriction. Fiddler crabs, gorilla crabs, etc, all have no restrictions. Although neither are ideal for a reef tank, so not sure why one would take them.

Yellowline arrow crab - Stenorhynchus seticornis.
Furcate spider or decorator crab - Stenocionops furcatus.
Blue-legged or tricolor hermit crab - Clibanarius tricolor.
Thinstripe hermit crab - Clibanarius vittatus.
Polkadotted hermit crab - Phimochirus operculatus.
Spotted porcelain crab - Porcellana sayana.
Nimble spray or urchin crab - Percnon gibbesi.
False arrow crab - Metoporhaphis calcarata.

well, my crabs i watch VERY closely, and they only come out at night and clean the sand, they dont even venture up the rocks, like, nto at all. I have some anemones and some zoos i there now, and thye are fine. They are GREAT for cleanup crew, i love the little guys...

Seth do you mean you keep the fiddlers submerged all the time? What do they do for air? Or do you have a ramp that they can crawl up?

they crawl up my UV tube and sit, so hey, i never thougt of it, do they need air? i mean, they cannot be fully submersed?


I have had some in my nano for weeks without any wat to get up, and they are still alive, but to be a fiddler crab, so they have to have one claw bigger than the other, because none of mine had that, they all were of the same size and i found them all under neatht eh water under rocks as opposed to the ones i couldnt catch on the rocks above...???

Do you have a pic of this kind of crab? The fiddler crabs that live in holes in the sand do need air.. but if you found these in the water i'm wondering what they are

No problem! I think going collecting is a lot of fun, but have learned lots doing it myself, and just like to share information about the rules of doing it, what I have done to qt the stuff, and what kinds of things you can find and see while doing it.
