firstly thank you to everybody who offered advice and well wishes after the loss of a rather magnificent anemone i was miss sold last week, i have decided maybe against my better judgement to try again, i did go back to the same lfs and this time was a bit more aware of what i was looking at, again the saleman didnt know a name and hadnt realised what i had been sold the first time around to be fair he looked blank when i told him what it was, 4 days later the nem is looking great, my maroon clown hosted it immediatly which is great and the only problem i have is its choice of position, its stuck on the front glass so i mostly get a good view of the foot, i hope the pics come out well beause im really pleased about how its settled in and have thought more about maybe not being completly at fault with the first one, please let me know what you think.

The anemone looks pretty healthy. It has a massive foot!!! I am stumped to what kind of anemone this is. Maybe a Crispa or Sebae but then again I seen no visible verrucae. I am clueless.

Ritteri? IME they seem to pick the front glass. BTA seem to want to hide the foot in-between rocks. Ritteris can become very colorful. They do seem to want to move into a high spot with lots of flow & light though. I cannot tell 100% from the photo. Clowns love them.

I do not believe it is magnifica. From the pictures posted it appears to be e. quadricolor. If you can post a picture of the mouth for a more certain answer. But my guess would be bta.

just last night she seems to have hidden her foot between 2 rocks, i couldnt see any marks or coloured spots on her foot, her foot is massive, im so pleased that it settled in so quick, if it is a bta will it stay white/cream coloured? ive added some pics hopefully you can see the mouth form them, thanks for all the replys

in this pic you can see that it is sat leaning on an oyster, it is open so i assume it's no threat to it, i also have 2 bubble algea on the oyster, i read you have to remove them without breaking them!! i dont quite know how.

in this pic ive added on arrow, i think these are aiptasia from what ive read, i mentioned these before but the lfs dont know about joes juice and dont have a peppermint shrimp or butterfly fish so im stumped, what next? ive read you can drop the stone in boiling water but i dont want to kill the mushrooms on the rock, looking around the tank there are loads now, will they pose a threat to the new nem

With that pic I would guess BTA. May turn light brown to green with time. Congrats, it looks good, just a little bleached. Feed it & time is on your side.

Definately not a Ritteri. Ritteri's have verrucae. This anemone does not. I am guessing it is a slightly bleached E. Quadricolor.

how do you feed this type of anemone? is it best to leave the clown to feed it? i tryed it with a lance fish, which it half swallowed, covered in like a mucus then spat it out, i have been adding mysis occasionally just over where its living, i havent tryed shrimp yet maybe worth a go, how would this have become bleached? i am giving it about 6 hours of light per day, 2x 150 mh, and also it hasnt changed colour atall since we bought it, thanks in advance

I don't think that's any oyster. It's aptasia.

I think he was referring to the bottom left of the first image. Where there are two bubble algae on the oyster.

That aiptasia does stick out like a sore thumb though.

Usually nems will bleach due to stress (collecting, shipping, & housing at the lfs that doesn't know what they are which makes them harder to take care of etc...) With good lighting and care they can color up if not too far gone. Yours looks to be in relatively good condition so it should do fine.

Luckily, BTA's are less demanding and more forgiving than other host anemones . A word of caution though, these buggers are notorious for finding and being sucked into overflows, power heads, and anything else that has suction! These things should be covered to protect your nem and the rest of your tank.

Some really good info about covering the intakes, and bta's can be found here http://www.karensroseanemones.com/

Aiptasia - I've heard of people injecting them with boiling water, using lemon juice, or making a kalk paste to put on them. Some people have luck with these methods, others notice babies popping up. Can you mail order Joe's Juice if you wanted to use it?

Good luck and enjoy!
