Sedra Pump not working completely

I seem to have lots of problems with my Sedra 5000's that power my skimmer. Anyway, this one just stopped working. When I took it out and inspected it I found the impeller moved but only when the cover is off. If I try to put the cover on it stops. I know the magnets of these impellers can swell over time, so maybe that is? But why would the cover prevent it?

Here's the impeller with cover off:

The impeller has a small rubber cap that goes on the top of the shaft. In this picture its actually stuck in the cover.

Here I took the cap out and stuck it back on the shaft:

Maybe the magnet is swollen (not really seeing that) and the cover impedes it just enough?

Any ideas? Tank is getting dirty :-)

I had the same pump on a ASM G3, mine quite working after about 8 years of service, I'm no expert on magnetically driven pump but I chalked mine up to the inner magnets not knowing which way to turn, if that makes sense. I use to be able to blow down into the venturi to get it to spin but after that just to get by I would have the skimmer submerged in my sump remove the impeller cover while it was plugged in and get it spinning by hand the put the cover back on with it still plugged in, I did change the needle wheel before doing all this and I only did it for a few weeks to get by I bought a new simmer

Yeah, its swollen. I got through an impeller every couple of years. What you can do to buy some time until you get a new one, is put the cover back on but dont tighten it all the way. It takes some tinkering, but sometimes it will give it a lil more wiggle room to rotate. It will be a lil noisy and not rotate as fast( or skim as well) but at least it will skim. Thats what has worked for me.

I had the same symptoms on a few pumps from a different brand.

If you run your finger nail along the ceramic shaft where the rubber fit, you may find small bumps. Use a sharp edge to clean those off and you should be good to go.

A vinegar bath may not remove all of it but a sharp edge like a knife or something similar will catch on them.
