Seeding QT Sponge in Fuge?

So I got all the equipment to set up my 20 gallon QT and found that the sponge filter I planned on seeding in my DT sump for beneficial bacteria is a little too big to fully submerge (oops). There is plenty of room in my refugium, but also lots of interesting critters, Chaeto, and a slight cyano outbreak (the DT is about 4 months old so I'm working through the usual new tank algae woes) etc. - would seeding the QT sponge in my fuge be anti productive and introduce unwanted items into to the QT?

Right now the sponge is about half submerged in the skimmer section of the sump - is that adequate to transfer to the QT after a couple of weeks and still expect a cycle barrier?

Thanks - I was planning on treating them as disposable. Replacements are cheap, and it's easy enough toss a fresh one back in the sump to keep one on hand for the fish QT and / or emergencies.
