Not too dredge up old news, however I have to agree with Grim here. When the Seio's where just coming out, there were a lot of discussions in the reef club about them so I just emailed them. Got the president on the phone, who is also an engineer, and he filled me in.
At some point in the past, the TAAM partnership broke up, and the Rio site was somehow taken by the person who left. That explains why there is no Rio .com site like many manufacurers have, and the one they have is non-standard.
Second, I was told that Rio has a large market penetration, both as Rio and as re-badged products for all sorts of markets. Competition is what it is, and stories of oil-filled tanks killed by crappy Rio's never seem to die. Strangely though, there are no pictures of such, and there was at least one court case about exactly this that was dismissed. Rio's apparently do not contain oil, but an epoxy. I wouldn't be surprised if there have n'tbeen some failures and death, but it did sound like there is a cut throat world of spin and mud slinging with respect to some of these tales. And that isn't something unusual, nor would the other manf's be upset to see that.
TAAM has extensive R&D and testing facilities in SoCal, and aside from their pumps, they have some significant light testing equipment and development.
I've had one 620 or 820 not restart once or twice, however I honestly do not know if it is because it hadn't been cleaned in a long time, or if I had simply cranked the screw-on cap way too tight after cleaning one. I also wonder why MJ's seem to have an almost mythical reputation, but have also got now 2 of them that have died or broken the ceramic rod.
I think TAAM has had to overcome some bad press, some real and some manufactured. However, they are innovating, bringing new stuff too market, so at least they are doing something.
I like MJ of course, but what have they really done since the MJ1200 was brought out?
Would be nice if we could get a bunch of dead ph's, and have someone rip them apart and give a run down on what they find inside, both materially and from a design standpoint.
Kudo's for the MJ-mod, but I found a link that I read years ago on putting a propeller on a powerhead, and here it is:

and

and from Advanced Aquarist:

Not as pretty as the MJ mod, but interesting that its from 2002.

[QUOTE but if you look at taam history. they never care what teh consumer wants
( god knows if you buy it and have aproblom you wont get any help from taam)
yea they have probloms. but they help you way more then taam does
i think TAAM should get a sponsor fourm here on RC it may help there customer service a bit
Have you actually ever tried to contact TAAM about a problem? The people I know of that had issues and bothered to contact the manufacturer (instead of *****ing and whining) had their problems resolved.
I ended up with a Hyperflow pump not realizing it was a Rio product. I had the pump lock up after a power outtage (better than 9 hours before I found it, no meltdown or tank crash. The pump wasn't even hot) and e-mailed them a question about whether or not that was to be expected. I didn't get an e-mail reply, I got a phone call. They asked that I not take the pump apart to fix it, they asked me to send the pump to them so the engineers could look at it. They sent me 2 pumps for my trouble and sent me the original back after they looked at it.
Not only did they try to make it right for me, they were also interested in examining their product to figure out why it failed. Since that time I don't warn people off Rio pumps any more. I had great luck with the Seio I was using on my system.
One thing I have noticed about a number of the supposed Rio tank crash stories is that nobody ever seems to have a picture of the oil slick and when they are asked what the company said they usually say "oh I was just so mad I threw the pump away and cleaned up the mess". Now I am not saying that Rio pumps never fail or that they have never killed a tank but I guarantee you if I had a peice of equipment massacre my tank I would have pictures and you bet your butt the manufacturer would have heard from me about it. I think some of these stories are just people jumping on the band wagon. [/B][/QUOTE]
