Seio Starting Problems

I know this has been discussed before, but this is rediculous. Every time there's a minor power blip in our area the Seio shuts down. Re-starting it is a massive pain - bringing it up to the surface, pounding it to try and get it going again. If anyone has found a secret to easy re-starting of these things, please let me know. I'm almost ready to junk it. Worst piece of equipment I've bought.

This is very normal for the Seio's. I've found that messing around with the plug (plugging it in and out really quickly over and over again seems to get them firing again). Man when they are working they really work nicely, sure beats spending the $ on Tunze. Good luck.

kruiswyk,

I feel your pain!! I have four of them, though one is no longer inside the tank. They are the only cheap pieces of equipment that I purchased and will be the last. I recently cleaned one of the 1500's and after over 40 tries, it just won't restart. I should have expected that a Rio by any other name is still a Rio and nothing more. I have already sunk close to $400 in a Tunze 6100 and the magnetic holder, but am more than happy with it. It starts every time and puts out twice the flow. Needless to say, I am saving up my coins for another one and will junk (not sell) the rest of the Seio's.

I'm running two 820's and occassionally experience the same problem. I have a third one that I tossed. It would not restart after its first cleaning. As the saying goes, "You can dress a pig up in a tuxedo, but it's still a pig"...... Rio...the leader in aquarium frustration since 1975.

I have had mixed luck with my SEIOs. I have 2 1100s and a 620. One of the 1100s WOULD NOT restart no matter how I nudged the impeller with a toothpick, etc. I would have to take it apart totally, reassemble it and MAYBE it would work. I replaced this 1100 with a Maxi-Jet. After I replaced it, I noticed there was a small crack in the magnetic impeller housing .. coincidence?

The other 1100 and 620 are hit and miss when it comes to restarting, but they always start if I use the toothpick trick.

I have 2 1500s myself.

One of them did not start after a power outage - I then slightly loosened the outer ring from the front of the powerhead and never had a problem again.

I think it was just wrenched too tight - now it is snug but not overtightened and it has come on many many times without problems.

Seio = junk i had a small power outage and the 2 that were in my tank fried. wasted money on 2x Seio 620's, i'll never buy another seio product.

Same experience here. I have 2 820s. I let one run in the tank till the calcium buildup on the impeller stops it from working. Then i swap in the other and it always takes 5-10 min to get it running.

I'm upgrading and will be ditching these for MJ mods.

I just received a modded MJ from a fellow RC member. I tested it out in a bucket a few minutes ago and to say I am impressed is an understatement. I will be ordering a few mod kits to boost flow even more.

I never had a problem with either of my Seio 820s. I switched to modded maxi jets as I like the flow better. Sure beats forking over $330 for a Tunze.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

rockindacheeks - it is less than a year old. If it gets better with age (can't get worse) I can't wait.

Amador - I will try the toothpick - haven't tried that yet.

ambaratur - I have tried the loosening the outer ring trick, no luck.

old salty - I haven't heard about the maxijet mods - where do you get those? I can do a search to learn more.

The reason I went with the Seio in the first place is I couldn't afford the Tunze's right now. To have to put up with this frustration with a powerhead is ridiculous. As an engineer, I can't imagine how they can ask people to pay money for such a poorly designed product and sleep well at night. Shameful in my opinion.

www.mjmods.com
www.oceanflo.com

I have 2 maximod, aka maxistream 1200's & love em. I got the parts through mjmods.com. I just found the oceanflo site. Their product looks much more 'polished' and comes with a warranty. But it sure is more expensive (but they do waranty it, including wavemaker use, and it comes with a cool looking swivel mount).

I had a seio 1100 and I loved it when it worked, to restart I just had to give it a nudge with my finger. But one day I was sitting on my couch and saw smoke come from my tank, so I looked in my canopy for smoke and it was gone and then it happened again and I watched the smoke come out of the water from the seio. I'm glad I was home when all that happend because who knows I might not have the tank anymore.
