Seios and anemones, & 400w and BTAs

Hi there,

Question 1:I'm still in the planning stages on a 29gal reef. I recently chucked my maxijet's in favor of one single Seio 1100. On my previous setup, I had foam on the maxi's intakes, but I'm unsure if I still need to do that with my Seio. I'm using it with the whole case/diverter around the pump. Are those anemone safe?

Question 2: I used to have an LTA and it did well under 400w halide, but now I'm leaning towards getting a BTA in about a month or two. Would that be too much light for a BTA, even though it would receive a long acclimation procedure?

Any comments or suggestions?

I don't have any experience with the Seios, but if there is an inlet for water to come in to be pushed out with this powerhead than it should get covered. Please PM Finding Nemo here on RC and she may have some tips on this particular powerhead.

BTAS are medium light needs anemones, in the size tank that you list having you could use power compacts and you should be fine. The 400 watt light I do believe would be overkill in this situation.

Thanks for the reply. I used to use 2x65wPC's back in Dec 2004, but my LTA didn't do too well under those. It was kindof bleached and browned out, even though I was feeding it 3-4 times a week. That's why when I was able to get my hands on a 400w system I couldn't pass it up. The LTA did extremely well under the halide.

I was going to eventually upgrade to a 3ft wide tank, but due a cross-country move and due to space limitations in my new apartment, I had to stick with the 29g.

Perhaps I can switch from a Venture 10K to something with a little less PAR, like an XM 20K or similar. My LFS has LTA's, various carpets and (-really, really- beautifull) rose and green BTAs. Carpets get too big for a 29g, so they're knocked off the list right away I guess... I loved my LTA, but since it's a new setup, I wanted to try something different.

Anyone have any experience with covering up Seio's?

I have a LTA and a couple of SEIO 1100s in my tank. The SEIOs are mounted without the big diverter, more tunze stream style. In the year that I have had this setup there was an incident with the SEIO and the LTA. The LTA got chewed up pretty good but has since recovered. I have no idea how it happened because the LTA is always in the sand and doesn't move much and the SEIOs are near the top of a 24" tank. I chalked that up to a fluke occurance but I can see where a BTA that moves often could easily be caught in the intake. I haven't used the diverter box on the seio, but it may be enough to decrease the infow similar to the powerhead mods.
