Im thinking of posting some of my Kenya tree corals on ebay for sale. I was wondering if anyone has done this before and maybe give me some advice on how to pack the corals so I can ship them, and what materials I would need for shipping. Any info will be very helpfull.
Thank you

you may want to try to hold off with kenya's until warm weather. Not many are willing to pay overnight shipping for them (inexpensive coral) and they have a tendancy of turning to mush with little effort. They make 40+ hr heatpacks to help with temp. As fas as actual packaging, Randy and Keith both have excellent reputations for shipping corals so they may have some really good tips

I just sent a box to California overnight through the USPS, and it was only $29. Far cheaper than Fed/Ex, and your box rides on the same plane. Heat packs are essential in this kind of weather, as are good coolers. But even using the USPS, you still have to have more than a couple corals in the cooler, to make it worthwhile (or else your 15-dollar frag costs you $45 w/ shipping).

Ebay is a strange market for corals. Plus I see allot of hyped up stuff selling on ebay. For example $500.00 for blue polyps! I don't know how kenya tree coral ships but I do ship green nepthia from time to time and it does well (overnight). Personally, I use fedex priority exclusively. It is expensive, but I have not had any complaints when I give freebies to help cover that cost. I see people using priority mail packages all the time. If your shipping close enough, the box may make it in one day.

Materials?, I use 9x9x9 boxes, then I cut basement styrofoam from HD to make a box that fits tightly inside of the cardboard. I seal the styro with 3M weatherstrip duct tape. In the winter months, I poke sevral small pencil sized holes on the top sheet of styro to vent the heatpack. I use 60hr heatpacks on extra cold days and 40hr on more mild winter nights. You also have to keep in mind the destination, weather it be the final destination or carrier sort destinations. Your box may be going to WI but may stop as far south as Atlanta. The temp diff could get quite extreme.

If you are a hobbiest and not a business, you can post your kenya frags at the selling or trading forums right here on RC for free. You never know what kind of deal you might swing for a trade.

Hey Kev,
Do you ever have a package not get there in one day shipping USPS? It does sound tempting. A small box to Cali would cost double that using FedEx, which I also use exclusively.

Like Keith and Kevin, I also use heat packs and small styro insulated boxes. A few times, I packed up some frags in a big styro box that the LFS's get not knowing FedEx was charging by dimensional weight, and it cost me 100.00 to send 4 frags to San Diego. Oopps.

The thing with USPS is they offer absolutely no guarantees on shipping. That's about the only drawback as I've seen MANY go with it on here in the forums.

Yeah, ditto what Tony said. Overnight's available... 3PM the next day. No warranty (not that you ever get your money back from Fed/Ex  ).....
I worked it out w/ the guy I was trading w/ prior, as part of the trade, we're each shipping USPS, whatever happens, happens. I did get an eMail back however that everything got there OK, he was un-bagging, and going to let me know. Old Omaha Steaks cooler and LOTS of Duck Tape!

While not shipping Coral Frags, I have sold a lot on eBay and I've exclusively use USPS. Almost 200 transactions and not one issue. For the price USPS is not bad. Just make sure nothing leaks, the USPS is still a little nervous from the Anthrax events a couple years back.

"Huh? Wha? I dunno. Water sample, I think? The Boss said it has to get there tomorrow morning. That's all I know..."

LOL, had that happen. I got a sebae from FL. Package did happen to leak. They were a little nervous, and became extremely nervous when the came across my last name....."KASZYNSKI". They called my wife's work, then her work called her cell phone and I endedup having a buddy meet them there since i was out of town (showed up early).

good fun

Well guys, I really would prefer to trade them locally but I posted it about a week ago but didnt really get too many trade offers. I have a bunch of pieces mounted on rocks and it would be a waste if I threw them out so I figured I would try to sell them on Ebay. Thanks for all the shipping tips. I have a lot of thinking to do before I decide if I want to go through the headache of shipping.
