I can assure you the clay pots are safe, there is a local breeder to me and thats all he uses, most of the time he also knocks the botton (base) out of the pot as well.
I also use a clay pot. Used one for my original pair of clowns that were breeding and when I lost the female and added a new mate I kept the pot in the tank. My new pair have now started breeding (2 batches of eggs) and they love their clay pot. They guard the pot and won't let even a snail come close. Best wishes for your picasso pair.
