I wanted to post some info about the upcoming September meeting that Moriah (mamagoose45) and I are hosting so that people can make arrangements to get there.
When: Saturday, September 15th at 3:00 (The website says differently, so if someone can change that, I would appreciate it). We just expect people to shuffle out whenever, so there's not really an end time. If I come downstairs in my PJ's, that's your cue to leave.
Where: 2121 Hwy 12 South, Ashland City, TN, 37015 (at the "clubhouse")
Any of the normal map software should get you here just fine. The only thing is that Hwy 12 changes names like 10 times, so the directions list that many road changes. Essentially, most people will want to take exit 204A (Briley Pkwy TN-155 North) off of I-40 west of the city. Follow Briley to exit 24 (Ashland City TN-12 North). It will be a left on TN-12. Note that you want to go NORTH on 12 (even though our address is Highway 12 South). From there, just keep going straight around 8.2 miles. We will be the first set of townhouses just inside of Ashland City limits. The turn is directly across from a big white sign that says "Trinity Marine Products." Most unintelligently, they placed the sign for our townhouses past the entrance for the complex, so if you actually see our address on a sign that says "Hickory Hills," you've already passed the entrance for our place.
Once you turn off of 12, take the first left and park anywhere around the pool and clubhouse (a white building with mailboxes in the front).
I sincerely hope that people won't be turned off by a potentially long drive to our location "in the sticks." To put your fears at ease, I live on the Nashville side of Ashland City and make it to my work at Vanderbilt in around 20 minutes with no traffic (on Saturday, you shouldn't hit much). For people south or East of the city, you'll have a bit longer of a trip, but we're less than 15 minutes off of the White Bridge/Briley Pkwy exit on 40.
Agenda: We'll meet at the clubhouse for the talk (bigger room with space to have a projector) and then walk over to our apartment for tank viewing, food, and drinks.
It should be a great meeting. Here's why:
-----Dr. Tanner, a Vanderbilt professor and expert in the field of foam fractionation (a.k.a., skimming), will be giving a talk about the science behind skimming. Skimming is very commonly used in reef keeping (probably almost everyone in the club uses one), but the science behind what skimming removes from our tanks and what variables are important to control in order to optimize the removal of bad things (and possibly minimize the removal of good things), has been given little attention by aquarists and scientists in general. Dr. Tanner and our very own Chris Stowers are just beginning to study foam fractionation as it pertains to use in the aquarium. This talk will be giving a good overview of what skimming is, how it works, and a little bit about what variables are known to be important for optimizing skimmer performance in the aquarium. We should consider ourselves very lucky to have a world-class researcher willing to give his time to educate us on this very important topic.
-----We have 2 batches of homebrew (an Amber and an Irish Stout) that should be kegged and ready to go by the meeting. All we ask is that people are responsible enough to get a DD or pace yourself accordingly. We will also have a keg of homemade rootbeer on tap which is pretty darn tasty (it's non-alcoholic and not that much different from store-bought rootbeer).
-----We have cornhole boards, so weather permitting we can have a little friendly competition out back. If you've never played cornhole, think horseshoes (only better) without the deadly factor.
