Setting up 75 gal need advice

on the skimmer, dont skimp, I have a seaclone that I paid about $100 dollars for that did basically nothing till I did some pretty major modifications to it. So your better off spending a little extra and getting a good one to start with.

We use pond master mag pumps for sump. We use Aqua Remora for skimming even though some people don't like them they work well for us. We use Viso-therm stealth heaters.

What kind of set up are you going to run? Do you plan to run an in sump skimmer or external? Do you want a internal return pump?

I'm running Mag-Drive 2400 pumps on my setup for the closed loops and return. I'm running a Iwaki MD40 on my skimmer.

What do you plan on keeping? If you want to keep SPS you will need a real good skimmer and high low. I like the Mag-Drives because they can be used as internal or external. They are know for heating the tank a little. What size drains are you running?

Im thinking about internal pump with a hang on skimmer in the sump tank i want to be able to have sps but i am sure that will take a while for me i still need to decide on lighting im thinking metal halide 250 x2 but dont know if that is best or what so many thing on the market and so many opinions making decision making hard so that is why I am asking you guys.

I have a remora aqua c on my 75 and it's skims pretty well. As far as lighting is your tank a standard 75? What is the L W H. My tank is a custom 75 so it's 52 1/2 " long. It can be somewhat crazy and stressful when getting started, Heck even after getting started it's crazy sometimes. I do know from this site, all will help without hesitation.

It is a standard 75 gal i am having it drilled right now i couldnt have the bottom drilled because it is tempered, so i was forced to go out the back but that is okay. the person who is drilling is putting in the overflow for me and he suggested putting in a stand pipe to reduce noise level any sugg. would be appreciated. I am also getting my sump tank from him it will be a 30 gal with a refugium new territiory for me lol but it will be fun.

For your Return I'd either get a Eheim or Ocean runner. If it were me it would be a eheim 1260. Both are quieter, move more water and use less power for the same GPH as Mag pumps do. Mags ratings are way over stated also. They rate their pumps for double sized plumbing. So to even get close to the rated GPH you would need to double the output plumbing. IE a mag 9 would need all 1.5" plumbing.
Skimmer I'd get a insump skimmer vs a hang on the back since you will have a sump. Cheapest bet would be a Coralife super skimmer. A step up in both cost and performance would be either a Octopuss DNW-110 or a DNW-150. If budget allows I'd probably get the DNW-150. I good skimmer will make life alot easier on you..
As far as heaters go.. Sorry there isn't a good one. I like Titanium heaters just cause they can't break and most have seperate tempiture probes. Get two small heaters vs one large one. If you can at some point try to get a tempiture controller like a ranco or maybe even just get a Aquacontroller JR down the road.

Thanks for all the help this gives me a lot to think about i just have to search around to find the best price on this equipment.

FYI,
I had an aqua c remora hang on in my 46 gal bowfront and just upgraded to 75 gal w/sump.
I did a lot of research and decided on an octopus extreme or my reef creations ocean force 100.
I choose the MRC because of the smaller footprint needed to fit in my sump and MRC gets lots of praise on this site. They are in GA and have excellent customer service, I was happy with my aqua c but this thing blows it away, tons of thick skimmate and my tank is sparkling clean. Its not cheap at $300 , twice as much as the coralife but from what I have heard it will perform at least as twice as good, do not skimp on the skimmer if you want to keep SPS. Isn't a becket type skimmer much noisier than a needle wheel skimmer?

Tomoko

yep and they tend to use more power also. When adjusted right they do work well though. Needle wheel skimmers seem to be a little easier to setup.

The MRC Oceon Force Skimmers are needle wheel style, the other ones they make are becket style and are noisier. My new skimmer with the needle wheel is much quieter and works better than the air driven aqua c I had before.
