Setting up a 40b, have some Q

So, im moving my 20l and my fiancee's 38 ( i hate this tanks dimensions) to a 40b. i want to keep it cost effective for now,
currently i have,
mag 5
gl*******s 300
two k2 powerhead
15 gal sump.


Can i get away with the smaller overflow box, or do i need to upgrade to the 700gph? And will the mag 5 work with the 700 kit?

I also plan on down the road getting a mp10.

In addition, i want to drill for return lines (hate those overhang ones) Should i go 2 1/2" lines or is that killing my mag 5 too much?

A 40BR has great dimensions, seems to be very popular. I have used both of those overflow kits, I think you'll be fine with the 300. The Mag 5 will only get around ~300GPH at 4' of head; unless you upgraded your return pump, getting the 700 kit wouldn't be effective. One 3/4'' return should be more than enough. I ditched my K2's for an MP10 and never looked back, it'll work great on a 40B.

How do you plan on lighting it?

I got a nova sundial t5 4x36, should be fine for now, so later i wont regrett staying 300 gph?

Deffinaly want to go with a bigger overflow. I'm running my 40b at about 2500-3000 gph I'm not saying you need to go that crazy but at least 700 IMO.

cool, so i will picked up that one, figure can sell the nano kit to pay for a decent chunk of that.

Do yourself a favor and instead of using one of those notoriously noisy glass holes kits, drill the bottom of the tank (one restricted hole completely submerged for drain, one hole with standpipe for backup drain, and one hole for return). Have your fiance build an acrylic overflow box for about $20 worth of product from Great Lakes Plastics. This is what I did with my 40B and it is silent.

It is important to restrict the primary drain enough so that the drain pipe is completely full of just water. It is the mixture of air/water in a drain pipe that makes for a loud swishing/flushing sound.

I see, i may look into that. MY gl******* nano isnt that bad, but i get where you are coming from, I would be the one building it and she just watches lol.
